Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Newberry.
Hi Amy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Transforming the story for pregnant and postpartum women after birth and empowering women to return to all the activities they love started with me in my small crossover Subaru, a treatment table, and a bottle of lube and gloves. In 2021, I opened Pelvic Prescription Physical Therapy & Wellness as a mobile concierge pelvic floor physical therapy clinic in Wilmington, North Carolina. Pelvic Prescription PT specializes in helping active women overcome the embarrassment of leakage, fear around prolapse and abdominal separation, frustration of the c-section shelf and pain with intercourse, annoying hip/back/pelvic pain, and uncertainty surrounding labor and delivery. I drove to moms in the comfort of their own homes (with nap time being the most popular appointment time!) and equipped women to be confident in their bodies again. As the need and awareness for pelvic floor physical therapy grew, there wasn’t enough time in a day to drive to every client’s house, so I moved into a cozy room in the basement of a historic building in downtown Wilmington. I quickly outgrew this cozy room after the word continued to spread and our team grew as well as I brought on an amazing administrative assistant and an incredible pelvic floor physical therapist. In 2023, we moved into a premier multi-room facility with a gym space for moms to get strong and a nursery for our moms and babies! On nights and weekends, we open our space up for our community to use: miscarriage support, a local non-profit 4th Trimester Mission, Junior League, and workshops. We are passionate about teaching women about their pelvic floors and collaborate with studios and gyms to continue to spread the word about the importance of pelvic floor health in resolving leakage, pelvic pressure, abdominal separation, pregnancy and postpartum pain, back and hip pain, and pelvic pain.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey of bringing this vision to life has been full of countless mental and emotional challenges along the way. Bootstrapping a small business from nothing requires sacrifice, working late nights and weekends 60+ hours/week, and learning from many of my mistakes. My biggest challenge is the battle with myself: my own voice that doubts my capability to build a successful mission around women’s health. Every day I fight to overcome the voice telling me I’m not good enough, and some days I don’t overcome it… but the next day I will. Approaching year three in business, I am learning that it is not sustainable to allow my physical and mental health to deteriorate. I am learning to prioritize my health because when I have my health and energy, I can give more to the mission of transforming the storyline of women’s health in Wilmington and heal one pelvic floor at a time.
We’ve been impressed with Pelvic Prescription Physical Therapy & Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are fitness-forward pelvic floor physical therapists who help active women overcome leakage, prolapse, ab separation, hip/back pain, c-sections, and pain with intercourse. We support women through pregnancy, birth preparation, and postpartum by empowering moms with confidence. As highly trained pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapists, we train women to get back to all the activities they love, from weightlifting competitions to marathons. We care deeply about our clients getting results and achieving their high-level goals. To meet these goals, we have a 3-step method to guide women to take the extra step beyond the traditional, boring pelvic floor therapy that doesn’t get the results they are looking for.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I completely agree! My mentor guides me every step of the way, my boss babe groups celebrate wins with me and encourage me when things go wrong, my husband sacrifices his weekends helping around the clinic, doing laundry, making merch, and making meals for us, and family and friends have been constant cheerleaders for me these last 2.5 years. They continue to encourage me when I feel like quitting, sacrifice their time to help me, and inspire me to keep going. This mission would have been impossible without my support system.
