Inspiring Conversations with Andrayah Poncé of Geometry Curly Hair Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrayah Poncé.

Andrayah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Andrayah Poncé, and I am a curly hair specialist, educator, and founder of Geometry Curly Hair Studio.

Growing up with curly hair, other kids often teased me for the frizzy “lion’s mane” that adorned my head. I didn’t know what to do with it. My mom didn’t know what to do with it, and anytime I visited a hairstylist, they suggested it needed to be straightened. I thought I had “bad hair,” “hard to deal with hair,” “unmanageable hair,” and it was a massive insecurity for me. For years I only wore my hair straight.

One day after yet another botched styling attempt, I had the epiphany that if no one else was capable of helping curly-headed folks, then maybe I should be the person to change that. I enrolled in cosmetology school as soon as I was able.

I learned nothing about curly hair in cosmetology school or working in salons. I was inundated with the same played-out narrative that “curly hair looks better straightened,” and for the first half of my career, I constantly witnessed the discriminatory treatment towards curly “highly textured” clients.

I promised myself that I would focus on the real reason I chose to become a cosmetologist, which is to help Curly Haired People. I armed myself with all the information I could gather to empower the curly guests in my chair, and I founded Geometry in 2017.

Here at Geometry, we service Coily, Curly, and Wavy Hair exclusively. We specialize in providing Curly Hair Education and using our own signature method of Curly Hair Cutting and Coloring. Our mission is to ensure that all Curly Folk have a safe space to embrace their hair.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Dispelling the “good hair” & “bad hair” societal construct. Healthy hair is the only hair type that matters.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

How do you think about happiness?
Hearing “I didn’t know my hair could do this!” And seeing our clients leaving the salon feeling more beautiful, confident, and capable than when they first came in is our goal. Our happiness lies in our ability to empower the curly community one guest at a time.
