Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Lucas.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for clothing and empowering other women. As a young girl, I would design clothing and bring them to life with all the sewing items handed down to me by my great-grandmother. After moving to North Carolina, I talked more in-depth about my passion for owning a clothing boutique, and my husband said, “let’s do it!” So with a lot of push and encouragement from him, the Dragonfly Boutique came to life. After facing a few setbacks, I rebranded the company and poured more of my heart into it. We started with a small table and one rack of clothing that barely had anything on it – at a farmers market before we obtained a brick-and-mortar. Doing pop-ups and the farmer’s market helped TDB grow quickly! Even when we opened the storefront, it wasn’t full like now. I remember the opening day, my husband reminding me to ‘stay humble’ and be thankful for what we have. He said to work hard to bring the vision you want to live. I remind myself of this daily. It’s taken a lot of grace, grit, and God to get where we are now. One of my biggest goals is to bring all my designs to life and have them exclusively available in The Dragonfly Boutique.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Honestly, the first go around of starting the business was not successful. Shortly after starting the business, I realized I was pregnant. After a rocky pregnancy and 2020 happening, I stopped perusing TDB during that time to focus on my health and child. I felt defeated and failed completely because of taking a break, but that wasn’t true. I got to a point where I knew I wanted to try again, so in May of 2021, I did just that.
Before, I tried to figure out what other businesses were doing because I wanted to be like them. I stopped looking at what other businesses were doing around me and focused more on being set apart from the rest. So, we tried again and rebranded The Dragonfly Boutique into this business with so much meaning and purpose – more than just another clothing boutique. We coined the phrase ‘You Can Sit With Us,’ which we’re well-known for now. I wanted more of my style and my passion for Jesus to be shown to others. I wanted my failures and previous hurt to be turned into this safe, welcoming place of unique and great quality items.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Dragonfly Boutique. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
The Dragonfly Boutique is a women’s clothing boutique with over thirty other small businesses, several being local or women-owned. We’re known for our ‘cottage core’ style, modesty, and, most importantly, our genuine love for Jesus. When you walk into the store, that is evident. Worship music is playing, a prayer wall is upstairs, and our motto is ‘You Can Sit With Us.’ This stems from Matthew 9:10 in the Bible. The scripture is when Jesus sat with the sinners at the table; he met them where they were. We strive to set an atmosphere of His presence and invite everyone to sit with us at our table.
We handpick our items ensuring the best quality while still being affordable, and also choosing to keep small increments of each item. I love doing this because it makes what you get unique and less likely to be matching someone else! Most commonly, we get asked why the dragonfly. The name, ‘The Dragonfly Boutique,’ symbolizes the transformation that comes when we pursue a relationship with Jesus. As you may know, dragonflies love water, so I think about when they dip into the water and come back out – similar to us being baptized.
I’m proud of our branding, ‘You Can Sit With Us,’ because it’s helped set the atmosphere for our customers who walk through the doors daily. I often hear that people feel a sense of comfort and peace when they visit us. Alongside that, having employees that help set the tone and all their hard work to be the face of the business when I cannot be there.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is to continue even when you stumble or fail. It’s not giving up when times get hard. This may sound cliche, but at the end of the day, things will not always go as planned, so prepare to have to brush yourself off. Success to me is when I choose to trust God over all.
