Inspiring Conversations with Christine Baker of Brit & Yank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Baker.

Hi Christine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents. It was interesting to grow up in two, very different cultures. I come from a family that is incredibly talented although their gifts tend to remain as favors for friends as no one has ever pursued entrepreneurship.

It wasn’t until I moved to the USA (NYC) in 2000 that I realized I could potentially work for myself one day (in the land of opportunity). My family has always encouraged me to be myself, to follow my dreams and I am fully aware of what a huge gift this is! Of course, not all of my ideas have worked out favorably but I often chalk it up to “youngest child syndrome”! I definitely dance to my own beat and have been known to spontaneously adventure solo! In 2019, I did just that… Having spent the previous 5 years in California, I decided to drive across America (solo) in order to find my next and hopefully permanent home. I landed in Raleigh, NC and was surprised to immediately feel settled here even though I was a complete stranger and knew nobody.

Anyway, fast forward to today… I am so happy that Raleigh has been the city to fully embrace my dream of owning and operating my own waxing studio! I graduated as an Esthetician in 2007 from Aveda NYC and found a true passion and excitement in hair removal. My studio caters to men and women and my personal motto is that “EVERY body is welcome here”. It is my goal that everyone feels completely comfortable and respected each and every visit.

I use the best and safest products available and I intend to offer one of the most thorough and enjoyable waxing experiences in Raleigh! My clients are definitely my audience – I love to chat, laugh, smile, and encourage. I absolutely love what I do and I believe that it shows in every appointment.

I am so grateful for the journey – past, present, and future… I am also honored to get to share my story here!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy to open a small business from scratch on the heels of a pandemic. Steadily though, a certain sense of normalcy is returning to self-care routines and I am here for it!

Also, being one of very few people that has never used social media presents a massive learning curve. The trend is to publicize in this way and I definitely need help (so, if you can help me please get in touch – I can pay you in waxing!) I do believe though that my customer base will ultimately grow due to word of mouth. I pride myself on being consistent and great experiences are highly likely to be shared with others! I completely understand the nature of this specific service, I take my position very seriously and am always grateful for every new client that takes a chance on me.

There are still some supply chain issues at times so I have become adept at keeping my inventory fully stocked.

When I look at my years in this industry (15 years so far), I clearly see that the biggest challenge is combating negative perceptions of waxing. Sadly, it is often seen as a comical element, punishment, or high-risk activity – I am definitely on a mission to right some wrong thinking through an amazing and surprisingly enjoyable experience!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business name is Brit & Yank [a wax studio] — Brit (because I’m British) & Yank (is what I do!)

I offer full, body waxing for men and women. I have hard, soft, sugar, and roll-on waxes available so that I can offer the very best experience for all hair types. I also thread stray hairs if necessary. Although trained in speed waxing, I like to take my time especially with first-time guests.

My studio is spotlessly clean as I adhere to all regulations. I have definitely created an environment that I would wish to experience as a customer.

I use natural oils, essential oils, natural astringents, and organic arrowroot powder. I deeply care about using quality products that are safe for the skin.

Christine is one of the most honest and integral persons that I have ever known. I have witnessed her give away her belongings to help people in need, even though she had the same needs! She is a genuine person and everything that she does is with excellence. Christine is excellent in her profession and has 20/20 vision, therefore she does not miss because she sees everything!! If you have received a service from her business and you were pleased with it, please tell others.. there is nothing like telling about something or someone, being convinced because of your own experience. Christine deserves to excel in this field of work and I wish her the best – LIVE LONG AND MAY YOU AND BRIT AND YANK PROSPER!!
