Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen + JoAnne.
Hi Colleen + JoAnne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
JoAnne took her first big step into wellness in 2003 when she became a Certified Yoga Teacher. After teaching yoga for a few years she followed her desire to make more of an impact in her student’s lives and received training as a Mindset Coach. Since becoming a coach in 2009, JoAnne has coached chiropractors, direct sales representatives, writers, hair salon owners, moms and other coaches in achieving personal and professional goals. Her biggest passion is supporting people in realizing their biggest dreams, goals and heart’s desires.
In 2013 JoAnne became a work-at-home mom, reducing her coaching and yoga practice to focus on her family. As rewarding as being a mother is, JoAnne began to feel isolated and lonely. This inner drive to be in community led her to begin hosting women’s gatherings at her home and at Breathing Space Yoga Fuquay.
Since starting those gatherings in 2018, JoAnne has hosted tons of events, multiple women’s retreats and reignited her coaching practice.
Colleen began in fitness as a youth soccer player. She started working out in the weight room in high school, one of only a few girls, because she loved feeling strong and could see the results of being faster and more explosive on the field. After tearing her first ACL at 16 and her other at 17, her experience in physical therapy led her down a road to learn as much as she could about the female body in athletics. Realizing her passion for training, she got her personal training certification after graduating college with an art therapy degree and minor in psychology. Yes, all those things do benefit and complement each other when serving clients!
Pregnancy and postpartum strength training caught Colleen’s eye early in her career and from 2013-2020 she specifically trained pregnant women and moms on their adventures to motherhood. This meant consulting with midwives, chiropractors, doulas, physical therapists, OBs, and active moms to determine how best to prepare for the physical and mental changes of pregnancy, prepare for birth, and train smart postpartum to heal and rebuild.
Time spent with women and professionals has set Colleen up with a one-of-a-kind perspective and approach to fitness, health, and life that is flourishing now with JoAnne in HYPE SQUAD.
Both JoAnne and Colleen highly value community so of course they met at an event that Colleen was co-hosting with JoAnne’s friend. And they hit it off! The stars aligned and they set off to create their first destination adventure retreat for women in Montana, which was epic! Having this desire to connect with women, they also started hosting local monthly dance parties in the forest. The fun, connection and joy felt from these ventures is now expanding into local wellness parties, day retreats, urban rucks, and future women’s adventure retreats.
We want everyone to embody fun and joy in the safe spaces we create because as adults, we are still meant to play, laugh, and connect just like we did in our youth. The experiences of BEING not DOING serve as a platform to focus on the things that matter most to you, and drop the distractions. It is so easy to be comfortable and distracted these days — is that what you want to look back upon when you’re on your death bed? Or do you want to remember the life you fully LIVED?
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We believe, as it is often said, that the entrepreneurial path is the fastest way to self-growth and overcoming limitations. When you decide to put your heart out to the world, it takes courage and oftentimes a lot of support, which is one of the main reasons we created the HYPE SQUAD. So the road has been bumpy but the bumps help guide the path and it’s all part of the ride that we signed up for!
We’ve been impressed with HYPE SQUAD, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Collaboratively JoAnne and Colleen coach goal-getting women in their weekly JOYLAB mastermind, fitness classes, group coaching, and private events. These experiences are for women who want to rise together through live experiences that shift you into the playful, calm, purposeful, curious, or ferocious lifestyle you want to live!
These sessions happen both in-person and online each month and encompass the various avenues of life that need our attention most for a great life: physical health, relationships, home environment, mindset, and nature.
We meet you where you are to give you the tools necessary to go from fried to energized, overwhelmed to peaceful, or stuck to forward momemtum.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Dream big, bigger then remember that you can only do what your nervous system has capacity for. If you’re filled with anxiety (or any other emotion) on the regular, you will never be able to add more to your to-do list (or your business) as your system is already maxed out with only a few things. The famous saying is, “you can’t pour from an empty cup” and what I’m saying is that your cup is negatively overflowing because of your current state. You need to either A) build a bigger cup to handle all the to-dos or B) remove to-dos so you stop overflowing. If you want greater capacity aka a bigger cup, you have to start practicing physical strength and endurance (movement), mental calm and focus, relationships that support your crazy goals, loads of nature time to reset and recover, and healthy environments that support your body and make you feel safe enough to be yourself in all the highs and lows.
