Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Jacobus.
Dave, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started HLC Site Services by doing the work myself and learning every part of the job from the ground up. I’ve always been hands-on and drawn to work that shows actual results at the end of the day. Early on, I saw a gap in the market for a site services company that could handle projects the right way, communicate clearly, and then follow through.
What started as smaller site work jobs grew as more builders, developers, and property owners began to trust us with larger and more complex projects. Over time, I invested in better equipment, built a strong crew, and expanded our capabilities. Today, HLC handles full-service site preparation for commercial, industrial, and private projects, and we’ve earned our reputation by showing up, doing the work right, and standing behind it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Like most businesses in construction, our growth came with challenges. Managing cash flow, investing in equipment, hiring the right people, and navigating weather delays were all part of the learning curve.
One of the biggest challenges was scaling while still maintaining quality. As we started taking on bigger projects, we had less room for error, or we would risk losing clients. That forced me to tighten systems, improve communication, and stay deeply involved in the work. Those challenges shaped how HLC operates today and made the company stronger.
We’ve been impressed with HLC Site Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At HLC Site Services, we provide full-service site preparation for private, commercial, and industrial projects. We specialize in land clearing, grading, erosion control, drainage solutions, stormwater management, retaining walls, gravel installation, and concrete work.
What sets us apart is that we handle everything under one roof. Clients don’t need to coordinate multiple contractors or worry about long gaps between phases. We take responsibility for the site and make sure it’s safe, compliant, and ready for construction.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of our reputation. We’re known for reliability, straightforward communication, and getting the job done right. I want people to know that when they hire HLC, they’re getting a partner who takes their project seriously.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the site services industry will continue to demand more efficiency, better planning, and stronger compliance. Developers and municipalities are paying closer attention to stormwater management, erosion control, and environmental impact.
There’s also a growing expectation for contractors to be more accountable and better organized. The companies that invest in their people, equipment, and systems will be the ones that last. HLC is positioned for that shift because we focus on long-term quality, not shortcuts, and we truly invest in our people. We are always learning and growing as a team, and we pride ourselves on working hard and never taking the easy way out.
