Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Park.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Homes… I love designing and building homes, but 9.11 and the resulting slowdown put my construction business out of business. At the time my firm was building 100+ homes a year and with a super staff of 20. We were going places… so I thought.
During this time and in-between building seasons, I had the chance to start a home inspection company. Little did I know my career path would shift and I would be left with this shell of a company.
The aftermath of 9.11 drained everything from my building business and when the dust cleared there was only my home inspection company left standing. So I started to plug away, using my connections, and network in real estate to start the ball moving. Sometimes the calls were brutal, explaining what happened to my construction business, the employees, and the staff. Thinking back on it, the conversations were truly therapeutic along with a motivational push.
As the years passed with added experience, I continued to grow, brand, and give back. Yes, give back to this exceptional community that had forgiven my business faults and helped me through the hard times.
My faith, along with this community was necessary again as I lost my father to cancer in 2008. He was my best friend, my best man, and a mentor. My dad saw the best in me and pushed me. Always a kind word when I was down and a stabilizing figure when temptations popped up.
In 2010, I was diagnosed with cancer. Again my faith and community lifted me up along with my greatest blessing, my wife. She is beautiful, strong, smart, and the most amazing mom. She had to carry everything plus help me fight my battle. Today, I can say that I am cancer free!!
My business continues to grow today, helping others, employing great people, and leading this inspection firm into the future. Challenges are ahead in this ever-changing real estate environment, but we will welcome the chaos and change, knowing full well the real estate community has my back and I have theirs.
Even though I truly miss designing and building homes, this little inspection business has become a part of our community, growing and employing 30+ great people today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Today, our business is rapidly changing.
When considering that, since I started Advantage Inspection, I had to learn, adapt and implement entirely new marketing channels (web and social). And the side effect of these changes and growth is that I or no single CEO — or any employee, for that matter — can be an expert or implement everything. I understand that this was, perhaps, always true, but it has never been more apparent in today’s business cycle.
In today’s world of instant gratification, clients’ expectations are sky high. They also share their displeasure quickly online whether warranted or not.
Today we are living in an era of constant change for the foreseeable future. Change is the new normal. I am preparing for and embracing that change by expanding my network, finding a mentor, and continuing to reach out to my community for advice, guidance, and support.
