Today we’d like to introduce you to David Pflugfelder.
David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up on a family farm and couldn’t wait to run away from it in the Northeast. I joined the Air Force and was eventually stationed at Fort Bragg, NC in 2010. At that point, the call to the farm was beginning and we purchased a homestead with 6 acres and started with laying chickens and a couple of pigs. After 2014, I began farming full time haven’t looked back.
We wanted our children to grow up being outside and involved with agriculture. While brainstorming a farm name, we decided on CATHIS Farm in honor of our kids, Caleb, Thor, and Isla. They are involved daily with chores and projects around the farm and have gained a deep appreciation of farming and their food.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never smooth when you’re farming. We have started from scratch and learned many lessons along the way. From animal husbandry to marketing to bookkeeping there are multiple hats that you have to wear when starting your own business.
We’ve been impressed with CATHIS Farm, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
CATHIS Farm is a small pasture-based farm in Lillington, which means we raise everything outside.
No big barns with thousands of animals pushed together. Only fresh air around them, sunshine in their face, and dirt under their feet. We believe happy animals produce higher quality food. Our chickens, pigs, cows, turkeys, and sheep live a great life on the farm. We believe in raising healthy nutritious food for both our family and yours.
We also now open our farm to the public via events at the farm every season and our on-farm store. Each summer you can walk the sunflower field, in the fall is our corn maze during the day and a haunted attraction at night. In the winter we open our walk through Christmas light display.
Our goal is to reach out and get people outside to the farm!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Our customers are amazing, their support has allowed us to continue to do what we love and grow!
