Inspiring Conversations with Debra Johnson of Poodles and Bob

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Johnson.  

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My background is actually in healthcare diagnostics, figuring out possible causes and treatments for human diseases. I have always had a love of animals, so as retirement drew closer, I considered options for a new path. Perhaps I could bring together my lifetime of experience with animals and my diagnostic skills to help pet owners. 

I envisioned a shop that brought together a line of products that would have helped me as a pet owner. Pet owners have plenty of questions along the way, my shop could be a resource and offer solutions, information, or referrals to other resources. 

While I was still working full-time, I decided to give my concept a try. At the time I owned poodles and a chocolate lab named “Sailor Bob”. So “Poodles and Bob“ was born. 

I found a consignment shop that would allow me to set up a small booth of products. I could get my name and contact information out without working the shop. 

Over the next few years, I added 3 more consignment locations. I retired from healthcare in 2021 and was finally able to combine all of my locations into one shop in beautiful downtown Manteo. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest challenges for me have been learning how to market my business through social media and handling business finances. 

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Poodles and Bob?
Since opening Poodles and Bob, I have worked toward establishing my business brand as a reliable resource for pet owners. I have become certified in Cold Laser and Acupoint Stimulation Therapy for animals. I’ve also collaborated with veterinarians, pet experts, and pet industry retail specialists across the country to build my expertise and to develop my line of products for my shop. 

Most recently, I have had the opportunity to open Poodles and Bob Spa in a space close to the Manteo shop. Pet grooming is in demand in our area, and I felt that I could help our community by offering this service. I was able to find a very talented groomer, and our customers are thrilled! 

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Manteo, NC, is a quaint, historic coastal town. It has recently gained recognition by the state “downtown project,” and it is an exciting time to be a merchant in a town that is growing and thriving.
