Inspiring Conversations with Graham Mitchell of GM Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Graham Mitchell.

Hi Graham, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My father was a custom home builder in Raleigh all throughout my childhood and is currently still a custom homebuilder serving Atlantic Beach and Beaufort, North Carolina. My mother was an interior designer and is responsible for some of the most immaculate designs throughout Raleigh inside some of the most prestigious homes in Raleigh that still stand today. She is now flourishing in her floral business where her artistic abilities can be seen on a daily basis. I grew up with my siblings, fascinated with art and design as well as building as a whole. My brother Byron is a business owner as well building top quality decks and exterior design elements in Raleigh. We have had our art featured in the state fair as well as multiple national art competitions, growing up. Between my parents and my brother and sisters upbringing, my creativity and business desires came to fruition starting as a one-man show building custom carpentry projects for my friends and family. Fast forwarding to today I have built a team of craftsman with the highest trade standards in what I would consider the entire country. My vision is to carry out the highest quality finish results in finish carpentry, painting, and flooring as well as hardwood refinishing and tile work. My crew is handpicked through trial and error over the years to say the least and for the last several years we have had our tight circle of pure artists that are dedicated to a perfect finish result for homeowners to enjoy for generations. Our goal as a company is to inspire and offer unmatched craftsmanship to businesses and homeowners. Our clients raving, and just about bragging that they had GM Construction into their home or business to perform their fantasy projects. The more outside the box the better!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been more or less of a roller coaster! Statistics show that businesses do not make it out of the two-year mark without being considered one of the rare few. I understand why this is a known fact as I was going through the first couple years of balancing and business as well as my personal life and navigating my way through professionalism. Today we stand proud, knowing that we have overcome many of these initial obstacles and of course still do on a daily basis! The backbone that we have grown over the years helps us face these challenges with integrity and optimism. Nothing worthwhile comes easy!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We have five main services that we offer which cover a vast majority of renovation needs as well as small custom projects. These include custom, painting and refinishing, custom carpentry, flooring, epoxy floors, and exterior hardscape. We have found that a lot of clients have had a bad experience with contractors in the past. Some of our clients have just stepped into the very first home. Expecting children, retiring, renovating their dream kitchen after 20 years of contemplation. People in the triangle are moving from all over the country even the world. A lot of different designs with a lot of different needs. As a company, we listen to those needs and make sure that painting a picture of the end result, as well as the process from start to finish, brings comfort and peace of mind to everyone we work with. Each one of our team members has specifically mastered their trade exclusively. From our custom painters that provide anything from popcorn ceiling removal to full cabinetry refinishing and painting. Our custom carpentry team that can trim out an entire home for custom home builders as well as build perfect stain grade cabinetry/ paint grade cabinetry on site. We have an epoxy team, that coats driveways, patios, walkways, garages, and more with unlimited color and design for a forever lasting finish. Our flooring team offers tile installation, slate, hardwood floor insulation/refinishing as well as LVP install and high-end carpet.

We invite new clients to reach out and take the guesswork out of this important decision to tackle those dream projects!

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
One of the main mindsets of Business owners is to constantly weigh out risk versus reward. Nobody wants to put a lot of risk on the table for little reward. The best way that I’ve seen fit to do this in our business model is to go ahead and hold ourselves to the highest expectations on every job that we do. There are handful of ways to run a construction business. I know many “successful construction companies” that do tremendous volume with unbeatable prices. The quality finish suffers with this business model but there is definitely a market for it! We stand out in quality and refused to paint over light switches for a landlord special. Value can be found anywhere depending on your situation and expectations. Risking more to use low quality products and rush our way through jobs for a low quality and low price project does not align with our image and overall expectations.
