Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Lynn Moore.
Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m proud to be born and raised in Raleigh.
I have always had a love for all things art since I was young, and I was fortunate to have parents who supported my enthusiasm.
In school, I took as many art and woodshop classes as I could. I was good at it, and I found freedom and comfort in art that I didn’t experience anywhere else.
In college, I knew wanted to inspire others in their creative journey, so I pursued art education. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and K-12 teaching license from Meredith College, and my Masters of Art Education from East Carolina University.
I consider 2003 to be a turning point in my life. I lost my best friend unexpectedly; he was only 23 years old. Processing through that tragedy taught me how fragile life, and our time on earth, truly is.
The experience awakened me to the importance of appreciating every day, not taking anything for granted, and cherishing every moment. His life continues to inspire me. I strive to share a reverence for life and find joy in the little things through my art and teaching.
Today, I feel incredibly blessed to be an artist, teacher, mother, and wife. My 5-year-old son is my biggest inspiration and my greatest teacher. My classroom is my second home, where I have the honor of working with some amazing young people.
One of my greatest joys, is watching my students graduate, pursue their passions, and live happy and successful lives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some challenges along the way.
Like most artists, I have experienced criticism of my work, rejection from galleries, and all the things that come along with being authentic and putting yourself out there. That can be really tough. But I’ve developed a thick skin and learned to be resilient, which is very important for any creative professional.
One of my biggest struggles, which I continue to encounter today, is balancing my time and energy. As an artist, a full-time art teacher, and a mom… it can tricky. I am constantly shifting and adapting, and some days just trying to make it all work. I think many other women can relate to trying to balance the demands of family, work, and home life. It can be exhausting at times.
But, I personally feel so incredibly blessed to get to do it all. I have had to learn to be easier on myself and give myself grace at times. For example, I now write my goals in pencil and constantly remind myself “progress over perfection.”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in original abstract acrylic paintings on canvas. My work is colorful, organic, and inspired by nature. I truly paint from the heart, and each one of my pieces has a personal story behind it.
I aim to create original artworks that add beauty and meaning to a home. I’m excited to now offer limited edition giclee prints! Prints allow the buyer to customize the size and finish of the artwork, and make art more accessible to everyone.
I also offer painting workshops and classes, both public and private. They are so much fun and we always have a blast! Anyone can be an artist and creating is such a relaxing and beneficial activity. I love watching participants gain confidence and get excited about their work.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I absolutely love the history, culture, and diversity of our city. I also feel deeply connected to Raleigh. I basically grew up in my family’s hardware store, Burke Brothers, on Hillsborough Street. My sweet 96-year-old granny was a nurse at Rex Hospital in the mid-1900s.
I was born at Rex, and my son was later born there too. Granny has told me stories of what Raleigh used to be like and it’s incredible how progress impacts an area.
I have watched the area expand and change over the years. And obviously, with growth, there are some pains (traffic – yikes!), but there are so many more positives. We have wonderful schools, community centers, parks, events, and greenways.
And don’t get me started on the food. I could go on and on about all the delicious restaurants! Regardless of who you are, there is something here for you. I feel like our community is really striving for inclusiveness and celebrating our differences, which is amazing.
