Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica White.
Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I originally started off as a Makeup Artist many years ago. Over time it wasn’t fulfilling anymore. I came across a local Esthetics program. I fell in love with all the possibilities that it had to offer. When I first graduated from school, I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I would work. My husband encouraged me to work in a spa setting so I could gain experience, but I’ve always been the kind of person to follow my intuition. My gut was telling me that I needed to do my own thing, and so I began waxing. Waxing was supposed to be a way to make quick money until I could build my clientele for facials, but God had other plans. I realized very quickly that not only was I good at waxing, but that’s what clients wanted from me. I niched down to only offering wax services, and I knew that I would eventually go on to open my own wax studio. I would write about it all the time in my prayer journal.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I haven’t walked a smooth road since I started this process, lol Luckily, I have an amazing support system. The most difficult thing that I dealt with was all the behind-the-scenes work that no one sees. One of them being janky contractors. I thank God for my husband because he really carried us on his back with all of the behind-the-scenes action. The contractor we originally hired not only built our layout incorrectly and used the wrong material, but he was also dishonest about licensing. Unfortunately, because of him, we had to tear our entire space down and start all the way over. It hot so bad that we honestly didn’t know if we would financially be able to recover from that. But God is so amazing that he blessed us with the right people in our path. The space looks nothing like what it’s been thru.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about DahomeyGoddess Wax Studio?
The # 1 question that I always get is how I came up with the name DahomeyGoddess. I graduated esthetics school in 2018, and around that time, I was experiencing “growing pains” I was a new mom I was growing spiritually, and I had just started shedding a lot of my old identity. I will never forget that an African elder told me that I had the spirit of the Dahomey women. I had never heard of them before. I did some research, and I was blown away. They were a group of female warriors from the Amazon. They fought until death. They would even go as far weaponizing they’re on bodies. Sawing their teeth and fingernails to be weapons. In other words, these women were FIERCE! Lol Fast forward the same year that my business opened the movie Woman King came out, and that movie is based on those women.
The one thing I’m most proud of when it comes to DahomeyGoddess Wax Studio is that it’s for my community. I’m a Greenville, NC native I attended our school system, and I love my city so much. It feel amazing all these years later to create a business here. I asked God to bless me with a business that allows my clients to grow with me, and that’s exactly what happened.
Because I see women every day, It’s important to me that every client that we see we really give them the Dahomeygoddess experience. Even tho we are a smaller wax studio compared to a franchise the one thing that sets us apart is that we are BIG on investing in our clients. We want to know what you’re working on. Your goals in life. What’s new in your life. We focus on YOU. We don’t want clients to feel like they are in a doctor’s office. We want them to feel at home, confident, and feel affirmed every time they leave. We see ourselves in every client we have. From students trying to figure it out to stay-at-home moms nurturing their home to nurses and dentists impacting our community. We truly have the DOPEST clients. They are so inspiring.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
First off, I will only be saying good things about Raleigh lol I honestly have no complaints. My favorite thing about Raleigh is the FOOD! OMG! The possibilities are endless. My husband and I are always in Raleigh, trying new restaurants and cool spots to hang. Again, I have nothing bad to say lol maybe because I’m not from here.
