Inspiring Conversations with Josh Monahan of 1 in 6 Snacks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Monahan.

Hi Josh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My family has been in the snack food business my entire life, and I have always wanted to join the snack food industry myself. While attending NC State, I realized that I wanted to start a business of my own. After learning about the 1 in 6 statistic, I decided to name our company 1 in 6 Snacks. Thankfully the business has done well, and we have been selling snacks for more than 5 years!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a difficult road getting where we are today! One significant setback was when we had to completely change the oil that we used to cook our products. When we started producing Carolina Kettle chips, we were using coconut oil- we quickly learned that some people have an aversion to the taste and were forced to change all recipes as well as packaging. We now use sunflower oil!

We’ve been impressed with 1 in 6 Snacks, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name 1 in 6 Snacks represents the 1 in 6 people that do not know where their next meal will come from. In order to combat that statistic, we donate a portion from all sales to the food bank. We have a few different brands, including Carolina Kettle chips, Pine State Popcorn, Memaws Country Kitchen, and Rustic Roots tortilla.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
When the pandemic began, we were not sure what to expect and how to proceed with our daily business practices. We moved to shipping more products and have increased our online sales. Now that is a nice portion of our business that we will hold onto post covid.
