Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Clemons.
Hi Katie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, yoga (in some shape or form) has been a part of my life. In my early childhood, I was taught to use breathing techniques to help with ADHD + gravitated toward movement shortly after. My time on my mat became sacred and necessary for me to function, but I never really thought of wellness as a career. After two years in a corporate setting, it was clear to me I craved something different and I decided to take a leap of faith and embark on a different path. After some searching, I packed up and flew to Costa Rica for two weeks to become a certified yoga teacher, studying under Marianne Wells. From those transformational moments on, I knew I had found the path that my soul craved. After teaching for a few years in San Diego, I moved back to my home state and dove into the yoga culture of Raleigh, which only lasted a few months before the initial COVID shutdown. I was so lucky to have met an incredible human along the way, Jolene Johnson, that shared in the passion of yoga, community and connectedness – when the shutdown began, we both knew there was such a huge need for yoga to help navigate the crazy times.
Yoga Soullective began as an attempt to keep connection alive during an unpredictable time. Jolene and I were both full-time fitness teachers prior to the pandemic, and instead of letting the shutdown halt the beauty of yoga, we decided to hit the road and reach as many people as we could. With our 1971 Volkswagen bus, Willow1, carrying a “studio” set up, we hosted pop-up classes in parks around the Raleigh area. As our amazing collective of souls grew, we found a temporary outdoor home that held us through the dropping temps of fall and eventually led us to opening up our brick and mortar space, 309 1/2 West Martin Street!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not, but that’s a part of the beauty in life! Our road has been filled with lots of ups and downs along the way which we expected when launching a business based on connection during a global pandemic. The biggest challenge for us has come in the form of changing guidelines, which has created lots of ebbs and flows throughout our business. That said, it also taught us to trust our intuition and let go of expectations. I’m a firm believer that a smooth sea isn’t nearly as fruitful as one with lots of life to it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Yoga Soullective was created to build community during a time that connection was hard to come by. We offer a space and place where everyone can feel at home in their body and in their community. Regardless of your level of experience, we have a shape for you and a place where you belong – no matter what. We strive to offer classes that bring value to your life physically, mentally and spiritually – our mind body spirit-driven offerings include a beginner-friendly slow flow, an all-level vinyasa flow, a strength and core-focused flow, an advanced level 2 flow, a slow flow to yin and a yin to meditation class. Beyond our regular schedule, we cultivate community with unique events, wellness workshops and fun, NC local retreats. It is our hope that by helping students cultivate a richer relationship with self, they carry that richness and inner light into the community.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Whether it’s coming to take class, checking out one of our workshops, events or retreats – you belong here. We appreciate each and every one of our sweet supporters and cannot wait to continue to grow with you all.
