Inspiring Conversations with Kim Rice of Bull City Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Rice.

Kim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
There’s nothing quite like being able to choke someone out with their own clothes! Learning jiu jitsu is one of the most empowering things I have done as an adult and now I’m so lucky to be able to teach it to others. My husband and I opened Bull City Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2022. We have steadily grown from a handful of students to a thriving business with classes for everyone.

I started training jiu jitsu in 2010 and first got hooked on the competition scene. I won several major titles including adult world champion at blue and brown belt and masters world champion at black belt. While I loved my career as a competitor, what excites me most now is growing the school and sharing the art of jiu jitsu with others who need it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Turning a passion into a business has come more naturally than I thought it would. But it also took compromise. If my husband had his way, we’d be in a 5 star location, everyone would train at a discount, and we probably wouldn’t make rent. If I had my way, expenses would have started low, but we would not have been able to scale to where we are today. Together we work to ensure the quality of our product, while still treating the academy like a business. Finding the right staff as well as business mentors made everything come together.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bull City Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ?
We believe that jiu jitsu is for everyone. We have classes for adults and for kids as young as 3. We balance teaching both self defense and sport techniques in a safe, clean training environment. Give us a try and you will see that jiu jitsu is the most fun you will ever have while working out!

When we began, we were mostly focused on our adult program, but we are so proud of how our kids classes have evolved. Our coaches focus not just on techniques but on character development. We understand that parents want their kids to not just learn new moves but to also develop confidence, discipline, focus, and respect. Our goal is to not just create little athletes, but to develop young martial artists.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
