Inspiring Conversations with Lisa Edwards of Sunday Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Edwards.

Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew from when I was a child that I wanted to be involved in the beauty industry in one way or another. After I graduated cosmetology school in Danbury, CT, and began an apprentice program, I turned my attention to hair color and chemical services. I was very fortunate to have a mentor to help develop my knowledge, skills, and abilities.

In the summer of 2011, my husband and I decided to leave Connecticut and moved to California. We ended up in San Francisco.

I was offered a position at Cinta Salon, one of the leading hair salons in the area. The catch was that I needed to complete their apprenticeship program. So for the second time in my career, I was an apprentice. That said, I graduated very quickly, and once I was on the salon floor, I rapidly advanced through the ranks to become a master stylist focused exclusively on color and chemical services.

After several years at Cinta Salon, an opportunity came my way to join the team at diPietro Todd Salon, another leading salon in San Francisco. I took the opportunity with both hands and ran with it.

As time progressed, and the Bay Area became more congested and burdened with drought, fire, and electric constraints, we decided to seek alternatives. In November 2020, we visited the Triangle and conceptualized opening a high-end hair salon in the area. We aimed to relocate in May 2021, and not even the pandemic stopped the momentum we had.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is never easy and we have certainly had our fair share of challenges, from launching during the pandemic to recruiting talent that can deliver our service standards. But like all things in life and in business, challenges create opportunities.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Sunday Salon you’ll experience our vision of modern luxury. We believe that modern luxury is being able to create your own unique symbols of status rather than having them defined for you.

Our boutique hair salon offers personalized service in a comfortable and elegant setting. Our services are designed to enhance your natural beauty and complement your individual style.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We believe in the rise of boutique salons focused on personalized service. With Amazon and other significant players disrupting the retail industry, we believe that salons will become cornerstones of commercial retail success as more and more consumers have products delivered to their homes, rather than shopping in person. The pandemic certainly has accelerated this trend. We don’t anticipate that the experience of a high-end hair salon can easily be replicated at someone’s home.

Fashion trends are also ever-evolving so it’s important to have strong fundamentals as a stylist because fads do come and go, and as a professional one needs to be adaptive to these changes.
