Today we’d like to introduce you to Margie Caban.
Hi Margie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had an interest in fashion but found it difficult to find styles that were cute and comfortable while conforming to my “Mom bod”. A lot of the local boutiques were catering to a younger demographic and I just couldn’t find items that were appropriate for my age and body shape. I started Grey & Co boutique in 2018 as an online boutique.
I then started hosting Sip&Shop parties at customer’s home but that became very difficult with having to bring all of the items in and out of their home.
In 2019, I decided to turn a 20 foot trailer into a boutique on wheels. Now I can just pull up on customer’s driveway and they can jump on the trailer to shop.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A few months after I made the trailer into a full-service boutique, Covid hit and all of my events were canceled. Masks were now something people needed so I then decided to sell masks as I was able to get them from my vendors. Not only was I able to get quality-made masks to my community but I also donated hundreds to local hospitals as well.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Grey & Co Boutique?
As a mom of three girls, I feel It’s important for women to look and feel good about themselves. When I started the boutique, I wanted to have clothing that women of all ages could enjoy. I’ve had teenagers and grandmas on the trailer able to find something that they like. We love hosting private Sip&Shop parties where the hostess invites their girlfriends over for a VIP shopping experience. Ladies love that they are able to try on the clothing inside the trailer in our full-size dressing room. The hostess also gets huge discounts based on the sales of her party so it’s a win-win! The trailer can be booked for a girls night out, bachelorette party, corporate or community event. The guest feel very VIP having the trailer all to themselves.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned that a business owner has to always be ready to evolve and change. Many small businesses did not survive during Covid and it was so sad. I learned that to stay in business sometimes, you have to think outside of the box and conform to the need of your customers at the time.
