Inspiring Conversations with Marilyn of The Oven by Lyn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started with my passion in baking. Most of Filipino gatherings I was attending I love bringing Filipino baked goodies or desserts, and I received compliments out of it. Also they saying I should sell it. Until pandemic came, year 2019, I was thinking for what I should do that will keeps me busy and at the same time as an income. I prayed for it, then a friend of mine encouraged me to sell baked goodies as she sees on my social media I love baking. I got inspired from her. So I started baking at home and the support of Filipino community was awesome. I also sells from Filipino events in other cities and producers of concerts invite me as one of their vendors. The word of mouth was a big help to me. Until I decided to focus with this and have the help of my husband. We were doing it for almost four years.

Year 2024 of September, we finally opened our small bakery in Burlington NC. We serve Filipino breads, cakes, pies and desserts.

My passion is baking and my family is my motivation. They keep me going and they’re support is unconditional.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a small business is no easy task. It’s a battle that we must win to assure we succeed as many failed.

Its never been a smooth road it’s always a challenge especially we have two small children that needs lots of care, love and attention. And no any family member here close by to help to watch our kids.
Another thing is everything getting expensive.

We’ve been impressed with The Oven by Lyn, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like about our City ( Burlington) is that we are in between of bigger cities which are Raleigh and Charlotte. Also the population is getting bigger everyday especially Filipino community.
