Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Dowgul.
Hi Nick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My professional career as an attorney started in Gulfport, MS where I was a public defender doing felony criminal defense for indigent people, which included a couple of Capital Murder case appointments and jury trials.
After working there for 3 years, I moved to Raleigh, NC, and worked at some small firms for a number of years. In February of 2019, I was laid off by my last employer and decided there was no better time to start my own firm than right then.
Almost all of my family members are licensed, professionals and small business owners. I also personally believe people should be free to work in any profession they choose without government interference, with some minor exceptions. As a result, when I started my firm I decided to focus on professional license defense & administrative law.
After I was laid off, I had about 10 clients at the time who decided to stay with me and I started working out of the bonus room in my house. Luckily, about a month into working for myself, a friend of mine called me out of the blue just to see how I was doing and offered me a space to rent in her firm’s building.
I took her up on that offer and subleased from her until December of 2020 when I was able to secure my own office. From there I’ve grown to have a full-time administrative assistant, part-time marketing assistant, and a number of other help via independent contractors. I’m continuing to grow and always looking for the next way to expand within my niche so I can better serve my clients.
I absolutely love helping licensed professionals in NC keep their licenses free from reprimands and suspensions or revocations. I have had the pleasure of helping a number of small business owners who are required to have a license to operate their business stay in business. I have thoroughly enjoyed helping licensed nurses in NC keep their license after an allegation or get their license restored after overcoming substance abuse issues.
I’ve represented a good deal of daycare owners, engineers who own small firms, licensed clinical social workers that have gone out on their own as well as many other licensed professionals from all backgrounds and walks of life. A lot of people complain about their jobs on a daily basis, and I was one of those people for a while, but since I started my firm, I realize how lucky I am to be able to contribute to hard-working, honest people on a day to day basis.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say managing growth and staying level after something goes wrong or goes right. It’s important to stay balanced and level and that can be a challenge sometimes if something big happens.
We’ve been impressed with North State Law, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My law firm focuses on helping licensed professionals acquire, keep, and maintain their professional licenses in NC.
If someone has acquired their degree, taken their licensing exam, and is denied a license, we can help just as much as if someone is already licensed and is accused of an ethics violation. I’m most proud of the firm’s Google Reviews. As of this writing, we are at 54 reviews, which are all five-star reviews.
The biggest thing that my firm offers is an experience in the courtroom, experience with professional license cases as well as honest and consistent communication with our clients. I feel that the personal nature of our business and how we approach each case sets us apart from other firms.
We make sure that each client knows what to expect and keep clients up to date as quickly as possible regarding their case.
