Inspiring Conversations with Paquetia Goodwin of Hayward & Love

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paquetia Goodwin.

Hi Paquetia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Paquetia, the owner of Hayward & Love, a stationery company. I started as a career development coach in 2019, right before the world changed in 2020. My goal was to help women like myself navigate their careers during transition; little did I know that idea would take on a life of its own as a result of Covid in 2020. My first planner workbook, The Strategy Journal, was developed to help professional women create development plans, track milestones, and focus on their career trajectory in an organized way. Typically, performance planning is done only within the scope of our jobs. I wanted to create a process that my clients could include in their regular planning routines.

TSJ took on a life of its own. It became more than something only my career coaching clients would enjoy. As a result of word of mouth, we would end up sharing the Strategy Journal at local vendor markets and selling to a broader audience. What sets us apart is that we are born out of experience. So unlike many sellers of planners and journals, we don’t outsource our products. We design our pages and covers. Our content is our own, based on my years of consulting in Technology and Project Management. We print, cut, wrap, bind, and coil every product we sell. And we love that for us and our customers. We are also intentional about our planner aesthetic. They are created to be show stoppers. Beautifully designed with gold embellishments, because managing your time should be both mentally and visually appealing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Because I create our products by hand, the learning process was ugly. I always salute our original customers because they loved our potential, lol. I look back on our early products and equally cringe and celebrate the journey. I was determined to show up and keep trying. I didn’t sell a thing before I “perfected” the construction process. And because I’m always moving the bar, it’s safe to say that version of perfect has definitely improved. That mindset has shaped much of our journey in business and life. Even if it’s ugly and a little chaotic. Keep showing up, keep improving, don’t give up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hayward & Love?
Hayward & Love is a stationery company focused on performance and task management routines. We believe that planning and organization support your time, and time management is wellness. From our digital to our physical products, we create spaces so you can cultivate intention and mindfulness, give yourself grace to do what you need to, and prioritize what is important.

All of our planner workbooks, notebooks, and pads are constructed completely by hand. We design, print, cut, wrap, and bind all of our pages and covers.

Our goal with our planning products is simple: to help you declutter your schedule so you can fill it with things you love.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the rise of AI models doing all of our micro-tasks, conducting interviews, and managing more and more of our daily lives. I believe paper and writing will be the “throwback” activity that keeps us anchored to our human-ness. Not humanity, but the intentional emotional connection of being human. Writing letters, sending cards, and keeping a journal. Those aspects keep us grounded. I think as the world becomes more automated, these small activities are more important than ever. I don’t think people will want to lose that completely.
