Inspiring Conversations with Patsy Watkins of Publicity Wax Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patsy Watkins.

Hi Patsy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Patsy Watkins. I am the owner of Publicity Wax Studio in Cornelius, NC. I am what you call a small-town girl with big-city dreams and ambitions to match. Since I was a little girl, everyone around me always spoke life into me, achieving exceptional things. Although it was amazing hearing those things at a young age, it was a lot to live up to, but I always used it as motivation to achieve my dreams. I have always had a secret love for beauty! Growing up, I watched my grandmother and uncle do hair in their salons and always loved watching their clients get out of their chairs feeling like they could conquer the world. The fact they could evoke that type of confidence and feeling in someone with a simple beauty service inspired me to do the same one day, and of course, who would not want to follow in their loved ones’ footsteps? My path to my beauty career was different from the one I imagined.

I was nineteen, married, and dropped out of Winston-Salem State after only studying there for a semester. I had no idea what I wanted to do in the beauty industry. I just knew I wanted to make women feel the utmost confidence in who they were and their appearance. I enrolled at Ogle Hair, Skin, & Nails in 2014. I originally found myself going to do hair but then stumbled across the Esthetics teacher, Mrs. Dancy. She took one look at me and professed that being an Esthetician would be my bread and butter in life and that I better enroll quickly before her class filled up! Fast-forward almost eight years later, I follow in her footsteps as an Esthetics Instructor at Gaston College and proud small business owner on Lake Norman!

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
As entrepreneurs, we choose the path often not traveled. There have been many struggles, but many of us, especially women, do not talk much about them. One of my biggest obstacles has been balancing all the hats I wear from being a mother, business women, educator, and friend. It has indeed been a challenge to balance all of these aspects of my life without one suffering more than another. Often working moms are praised for being hustlers but also shamed privately for not spending enough time dedicated to their children. Although internally, this was a struggle of mine for a very long time; I have recently become more vocal about how these two things can exist at the same time. And we should never feel ashamed for following our dreams and setting our children up for future success and generational wealth!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Publicity Wax Studio was birthed when my passion for beauty collided with my love of people. After graduating from Ogle Hair, Skin, and Nails in 2014, I have been on my esthetic journey to find the perfect fit. Upon completing my Master’s Educator licensing in 2018 at Gaston College, I stumbled upon a newfound love for waxing. During my time as a wax specialist, it has been my pleasure to service clients from all walks of life! Doing so has inspired me to open my waxing studio, which fosters an environment of inclusivity and body positivity! At Publicity Wax Studio, each client deserves a tailor-made service and experience that leaves them feeling like a celebrity! I specialize in Brazilian waxing for everyone, and I mean everyone. Publicity Wax Studio proudly services clients from all journeys of life, demographic, sexual orientations, and gender identities. We believe no matter who you are; you deserve A-List treatment. Over the past year and a half, Publicity Wax Studio has become more than a place clients come to get beauty services rendered; it has become a community. Clients feel free to be authentic, celebrate their bodies, share their victories and even seek to console for their losses. I want readers to know that when you first walk into Publicity, you will walk in as a client and leave a new family member!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
As cliche as it sounds, one of my favorite childhood memories growing up was getting ready for church on Easter Sunday. My grandmother was a beautician, so she always kept my hair done to the nines, and weeks prior, we would shop until we dropped at Peaches and Cream! I knew ever since then I would always give “IT GIRL” energy! Nothing felt better than coming to church on Easter Sunday dressed to impress your church girlfriends with the latest and greatest fashion finds.
