Rena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Bronx, New York. I embarked on a part-time freelancing journey as a bookkeeper in 2002, while holding a senior level management position, with the vision of becoming a future business owner, catering to varied clients across diverse industries. This allowed me to garner invaluable experiences and skills from these organizations. In 2005, my brainchild, ‘RGM Bookkeeping Services Corp.’, was duly established and incorporated as an S-Corp in the state of New York. Even after incorporating, I continued to work part-time at my company, gradually taking on a few select clients over the years. While working full-time, I pursued my bachelor’s degree in accounting and became a Certified Bookkeeper accredited by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. After devoting 19 years to two different employers, I finally reached a pivotal moment in 2019, where I took the step towards fulfilling my dream of becoming a full-time business owner. I resigned from my job and sold my house to relocate to North Carolina, utilizing the proceeds to clear my debts and make a modest contribution towards my business in its nascent stages. It took 14 long and arduous years to turn my dream into reality, and I had the unwavering support of my family, who stood behind me through thick and thin. Today, I proudly serve a diverse clientele, with a specialized focus on private service-based companies and non-profit organizations. Taking that leap of faith and pursuing my entrepreneurial aspirations has undoubtedly been one of the greatest decisions I have made in my lifetime.

A significant challenge in running my business is ensuring there is sufficient cash flow to meet monthly payroll obligations, even when client payments are delayed. Late payments can create a cash flow gap that puts pressure on operational expenses. To manage this, I carefully monitor accounts receivable, maintain a reserve fund, and implement proactive follow-up processes to encourage timely payments. These efforts help stabilize cash flow and protect the business from disruptions, but they require continuous attention and planning.
