Inspiring Conversations with Sara Bacon of Command C

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Bacon.

Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got my BA from Smith College and went straight into an MFA program at Tyler School of Art. It was that in-between moment when digital was just beginning to change everything, and I happened to catch the wave early. I was offered a scholarship to set up and run a new digital lab, which meant I got to learn by doing—photography, graphic design, web design, and development all rolled into one crash course.

After grad school, I moved to New York City and, as I like to say, started Command C on Craigslist. Back then, I posted ads for whatever creative skill someone might need: product photography, graphic design, web design. I remember my first web contract clearly. It was a $500 contract for a company called Sparkling Cleaning NYC. At the time, that was a big deal. But more than that, it was a lightbulb moment. I saw where the world was going, and I decided to follow it.

Since then, I’ve just kept going. Command C has been a lesson in iteration and adaptation. I guess that’s what keeps me interested. What started as a one-person creative hustle has grown into a full-fledged agency with a clear mission: helping 8-figure ecommerce brands adapt and thrive in a world that never stops changing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ha! Yes, it’s been perfectly smooth, effortless, and entirely stress-free for the past two decades.

No. Building Command C has been one of the wildest, hardest, most character-building experiences of my life. There have been moments of total exhilaration and moments when I’ve questioned my sanity. But I think that’s why I’ve stuck with it. I’m wired to solve problems and keep evolving, and Command C has never stopped giving me reasons to do both.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Command C helps 8-figure DTC ecommerce brands navigate complex migrations, fix fragile builds, and scale with confidence through expert development support, clear communication, and a technical foundation that removes bottlenecks and unlocks growth.

We’re a women-owned technology-led Shopify Plus agency and the creators of the Strategic Technical Roadmap.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Oh, I was a feral nature child. I grew up in Woodstock, New York with artist/entrepreneur parents. I wanted to be outside and doing things with my hands and body.
