Inspiring Conversations with Sarah Mouna – Pharmacist, Singer/songwriter, and Dancer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mouna.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
Well I’ve always been drawn to music. Since I was little, I was seen dancing and singing around the house with my family. When I was around 12 years old, my mother wrote children’s songs and recorded my sister and I singing while she played the music on the piano. We professionally recorded the music and created CDs to give to friends and family. My mom took us around town to perform for community centers, retirement homes, and Salem College in Winston-Salem. I remembered it being the coolest thing when I was little. From this experience, I knew I wanted to pursue music and dance. Fast forward years down the road, I still felt it was essential to get a good education and I realized I experienced so much joy in helping others. I looked up to my parents who were pharmacists, musicians, and small business owners. I thought if they could do it as immigrants, so could I being a first-generation Syrian-American. I got my doctorate from the #1 pharmacy school in the nation (UNC-Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy) this year while pursuing my dreams in music and dance. I have danced in music videos, live performances and even taught my own choreography classes while still studying in pharmacy school. I released three songs so far (find me on all music platforms) and 100% of all proceeds go to various charities. I love exploring new endeavors, so now I have been focusing on creating various content for my Instagram and TikTok. I have been blessed to collaborate with big brands such as Giorgio Armani Beauty, Prada Beauty, Kiehl’s, Parade, Breakaway Festival, etc. as a micro-influencer by just being myself. I want my story to encourage others to chase any dream they have and not just that, but also to chase ALL their dreams. No dream or endeavor is too big as long as you believe in it. I especially want others to know that even if you go down a route such as medicine/health care, it does not mean you have to give up your creative dreams or hobbies. You can be anything you want in this world, and for me, that was a pharmacist by day and singer/dancer by night.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
With more goals comes more challenges. A challenge I had no control over was the Syrian civil war that occurred years ago that affected my extended family and eventually me. There was a lot of tragedy and challenges we faced as a family (aside from just dealing with the discrimination of being Syrian living in a rural area). This pushed me to want to do medicine to help others and one day hopefully help refugees on a mission trip. Other minor challenges I faced were learning to juggle so many hobbies while in pharmacy school and still trying to be a good friend/family member. I did have to sacrifice, at times, my social life to accomplish my goals and dreams, which makes me extremely grateful for the friends and family who supported me through it all.

We’ve been impressed with your pharmacy and music/dance career, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I work as a pharmacist now with my parents, who are also pharmacists and owners of 2 pharmacies in Winston-Salem (Med Solutions Compounding Pharmacy and Carolina IV Solutions). We are also opening a new pharmacy that will be a FDA-approved facility for producing compounded products in bulk for hospitals. My title is the chief executive pharmacist of the new pharmacy and staff pharmacist at the other 2 existing pharmacies. Outside of my 9-5 job as a pharmacist, I still try to build my brand as a singer/songwriter, dancer, and micro influencer. I think I am unique in that I don’t really know anyone else trying to pursue all the things I am pursuing at once. I am proud of my work ethic and confidence in pursuing my dreams/goals, which sometimes seem impossible at first.

In terms of your work and the industry. What are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
If everything goes well, in the next 5-10 years, I see our new pharmacy being a large pharmaceutical company, our existing smaller pharmacies expanding and hopefully, my music/dance career taking off as well.
