Inspiring Conversations with Sharon Wright of Awaken Med Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Wright.

Hi Sharon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I began a career as an RN with a passion for caring for others. I truly have enjoyed easing others’ suffering or worries, and I have endeavored to do this during my years working in the hospital and medical office settings. I’m originally from PA but made the decision to move to NC to have more opportunities and a more diverse environment where my family could enjoy all that NC has to offer.

My husband, Dr. Khusayem, and I opened a medical practice in 2000 in the Clayton area. Over the years, I took on a more administrative role in the office to allow for time to spend raising my children. My own personal experience at a med spa led me to look at this setting and appreciate how it not only provided beneficial services but could also directly impact the self-confidence and emotional wellbeing of its clients.

I’ve come to understand that self-care and self-confidence are crucial, especially as we are getting busy in our lives and caring for so many others. I began to look at the Clayton area and realize that similar to the need for medical practices in 2000 when we opened Clayton Internal Medicine, there was a definite need in the area for medical aesthetic services to be available locally.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I began to study and learn more about the industry and made a preliminary plan to open in late 2019 to early 2020. The first news stories were breaking about COVID shortly before we planned to open. I watched the news closely and made the decision to delay our opening in light of all the challenges COVID presented and understood that during that time, we were all just trying to stay safe and healthy in a very uncertain situation.

Although this was a disappointment and setback, it ended up being a silver lining that allowed me more time to further understand all the details and requirements that go into starting such a business and planning carefully to ensure that it could be successful as well as beneficial to the Clayton and surrounding community. During this time, we redesigned a building and were able to truly plan how we wanted the spa to look and feel as well as the layout.

Obviously, there were challenges in delays for building as well as serious inflation on materials for building due to the COVID situation, but we persevered, and the project is now completed. We are excited to offer an amazing and beneficial experience for our clients.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
It is vital to have an amazing team to provide quality services and consultations. We have staff that is highly knowledgeable, skilled, and very much in tune with their clients’ needs. Our receptionist, Kaitlyn, makes all feel welcomed and comfortable from the moment they reach out to inquire through the entire process of receiving services and check out.

She makes every effort to make each client’s experience pleasant and professional. Katie, our esthetician, is passionate about skincare and makes each client’s consultation individualized based on their needs and concerns. She loves to get to know her clients well helping them achieve their skincare goals. Brooke, our Physician Associate, has a wealth of knowledge, skill, and experience and has been in the medical aesthetics industry for over 15 years.

Each client experiences a highly personal thorough consultation where a customized and strategic plan of care is mutually decided upon to help them achieve beautiful, natural, and authentic-looking results while emphasizing the safety and efficacy of each procedure. It is also very important to be open to advice and collaborate with team members.

There is always more to learn, and I have been at times overwhelmed with the learning curve in this process but also have enjoyed the challenge and education that it has provided. It has been absolutely inspiring to work with this amazing team and I am excited to see what the future holds for Awaken Med Spa of Clayton, our staff, and our community.
