Today we’d like to introduce you to Tikeya James.
Hi Tikeya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Tikeya James and I am the owner and CEO of Royal Flush Athletics, based out of Chapel Hill, NC. Competitive Cheerleading has been a huge part of my life since I was 6 years old. Growing up, people always knew me as the cheerleader and I loved it! I continued cheering until I aged out at 17 years old, after graduating high school. Immediately, I started coaching! I could not let go of the sport that shaped who I was. I opened a brand new location under the company that I grew up cheering for, and I also coached a few of their other locations as well. But, I always had the dream of having my own cheer gym. It was always in the back of my mind and I knew from the beginning that was my long term goal.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Just as any other career journey, there were people that didn’t want to see me succeed. There were people that I idolized as a kid, who turned against me. It was an emotional roller coaster. I had to learn how to tune out all of the negativity, and truly focus on what I wanted and how I wanted to build my business. At the end of the day, it’s just that; my business! I am the one whose reputation is on the line. I had to tell myself to leave those people where they are, wish them the best, and move on.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Royal Flush Athletics is an All Star Cheerleading organization that focuses on the personal growth of our athletes, nurturing a positive environment, and building a family. We have competitive and non-competitive program options for ages 4-18 and all experience levels.
We’ve worked so hard to curate an environment where everyone is welcome. Regardless of someone’s experience level, their identity, or any hardships that they’ve had to overcome, we have a spot for them at RFA. That’s what sets us apart. If an athlete wants to compete, they will compete! Yes, we have tryouts, or team evaluations, but EVERYONE will make a team. On the opposite side, if an athlete doesn’t want to compete, that’s fine too. We have classes that they can take without the team commitment.
I am so proud to have built a brand that embodies all of the lessons I learned from being a cheerleader. Perseverance, dedication, sportsmanship, hard work, tenacity; these are just a few of the aspects that we strive to instill in every single athlete that comes in contact with RFA.
We have so many programs currently open for new registrations. We also have team evaluations coming up in July for our next competitive season. We would love for any and everyone to come join our cheer family. We offer fundraising opportunities, along with payment plans as well.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Being a wife, a mom, a business owner, a Team Stylist, and an educator is a lot. I like to use apps such a Trello and Google Drive to keep myself organized. I’m also the woman with the color coded planner that writes everything down. I have to, in order to keep myself sane. Time management is key.
