Life & Work with April Dozier

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Dozier.

Hi April, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started when I was 5 years old asking my mom if I could play in her makeup! It started when everyone was done coloring in their pictures in class and I wanted to keep going. It started in middle school when I sketched a whole notebook worth of faces with lip colors, hairstyles, and eyeshadow on them. It started in high school when I would daydream about makeup when I should have been focused on algebra. That’s when my passion for creativity and makeup started. At the age of 16 I absolutely could not wait to wear makeup. I will never forget the day I applied black lip liner on my lips and topped it with gloss! HA! After years of thinking I needed to go to school for accounting and finance, I realized my heart kept leaning towards skincare and beauty. So, in 2007 I decided to take a step and attend school for esthetics learning about the skin. From there, I continued to offer makeup services as a side job for clients such as brides, business owners, non-profit organizations, etc. As the industry of makeup began to flourish the demand of clients continue to increase. So, in 2019 I did a thing and stepped away from my full-time job to pursue a full-time career in the beauty industry.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth road? Never. Being a full-time Makeup Artist has definitely been challenging. In the beginning, when I decided to become a freelance makeup artist on the side, comparing my craft was a struggle of mine. It was like I was going through some type of identity issue because I just couldn’t figure out what my signature look was. Fast forward up to now I have grown to realize that natural glam makeup looks is what I specialize in. Those are my clientele, that’s who I attract. Clients who want a natural and clean makeup look. I love making women feel good along with looking good. As a full-time entrepreneur, I have learned to balance my time and be creative. If you’re not creative with creating content or advertising yourself on social media you will not get the clients you need to keep your business steady. In all honesty, when I stepped away from my full-time job, I questioned myself like “April what in the heck did you just do”? You left a full-time good-paying job, to pursue a passion. It was a very tough decision but with much prayer and planning I did it and it has been the best decision I have ever made.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional Makeup Artist. I specialize in natural glam, clean makeup looks especially for clients who need headshots done. They love the appearance of natural looks. I am most proud of the response I receive when clients show me their professional photos with their makeup done. I love how it makes them feel. My client’s whole attitude changes!

My customer service skills along with my welcoming personality sets me apart from others. I make sure I create an atmosphere in the studio to relax each client that comes in. We are therapists too! So not only do I give them a makeover I also give them words of encouragement. I believe that the makeup should not wear us but we wear the makeup. What’s on the inside of us should supersede what we wear. Another thing that sets me apart from others is allowing my client to have an opinion as to how they want to look. Listen if she doesn’t want to wear bright red lipstick then don’t give it to her. I take my clients slow, however, I ease them into trying something different.

What matters most to you?
Making my clients feel good on the inside as well as the outside. I am an advocate for inner healing. Before you leave my chair, I want you to know and believe that beauty is not how you look but it is who you are and how you carry yourself.

April Dozier, my niece, is phenomenal! I have known her since her birth and can attest to her growth and ability to impact the lives of others through her genuine personality, her resounding singing, and, of course, her commitment to God and love for family. At first, I could not “wrap my head” around her career choice, but now, I am convinced that her willingness to do her very best results from the accolades and proof of her professional ethics from her clients. I am pleased!
    Much love and support,
    Aunt Marjorie
