Life & Work with Ashley Stone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Stone.

Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for creating and documenting. Photography has always been a part of my life. I actually went to school for nursing and worked as an RN for 5 years before leaving that career and jumping feet first into the photography world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting your own business is never “easy”. You have to be driven and self-motivated. There will be very few in the business who want to help you. I think in the beginning that was the hardest part for me. Not having someone I could rely on for all the details of starting a business. Over my 15 years in the business, I have seen a shift in the industry. More photographers are branching into education and promoting “community over competition”. That does give me hope for the new photographers entering into this business. Another big piece of advice I give is “comparison is the thief of joy” especially now with social media and “likes” it can be easy to beat yourself up and let thoughts creep in your mind like you aren’t good enough. You need to remember your style and your why and focus on growing your own brand. Never compare yourself to someone else. There is plenty of business for all of us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer based in NC. I love to shoot weddings, couples, families, seniors, and newborns. My business has grown with the clients I have worked with. My style is a mix between candid lifestyle images and classic posed portraits. My imagery is edited to be more of a “moody” tone with rich earthy colors. Some people call it “vintage” when they see it. I am super proud to be trusted to document many of life’s special moments for my clients. I have often heard of photographers being “Storytellers” and that is exactly what I feel like describes it best. I love writing stories through images. These are the memories left of a moment and the heirlooms passed down to younger generations. I am truly blessed by this job.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Nowadays there are soooo many options for education. I like Pinterest for inspiration, Instagram reels for quick hacks or tricks to try with my camera. And still enjoy the good old fashion meet-ups with others in the business to bounce ideas off each other.
