Today we’d like to introduce you to Aurelis Lugo.
Hi Aurelis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started this journey four years ago when I made the decision of dedicating myself to art professionally. I have been an art teacher for the past 14 years, but it wasn’t until 2018, that I decided to follow my dreams.
So, I started to paint murals and participated in different art shows. I gained confidence and made it. Two years ago, I made the difficult, but the very necessary decision of leaving my country and having a fresh start in another place.
Curiosity brought me to Fayetteville, got a teaching position with the County after two years teaching in Fayetteville, I am relocating to Raleigh where I got another teaching position.
In terms of my art, perusing my dream got me to different places from my first solo show here in the USA to London!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been tough, but I can’t complain, especially when you are a single mom. But those struggles along the way make you stronger and wiser.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Visual Artist and an Arts Educator.
I focus my work on highlighting the stories of Afro Puertorican women. I like to educate and make visible the many stories of Afro Puertorican women that did amazing things for our culture, but because they are women and afro descent, they haven’t been recognized as they should.
These are stories of empowerment that serve as examples to our girls!
