Life & Work with Beverly Goins of Sanford/Holly Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Goins.

Hi Beverly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since college, I have always been fascinated about self-defense tools and searching for ways to protect, not only myself, but others. Self-defense tools have been a common theme as gifts for my family members and friends. Strap Da Pack was created because of my own personal experience of a terrifying moment where I was almost attacked while leaving my clinical practice. I was wearing a normal fanny pack and could not access my self-defense equipment in time. That moment made it clear how critical it is to have self-defense tools that are easily and quickly accessible. Strap Da Pack helped solve that problem, offering a stylish, secure crossbody and waist bag with quick access magnetic buttons so anyone can reach into the bag and pull out their self-defense tools without even fumbling because safety should never be out of reach.

After numerous bag designs, I was able to put a vision on paper and began to design a bag where self-defense tools, such as kubatons, pepper sprays, stun guns, and personal alarms could be easily accessible. The numerous pocket space allows for every day use as well. You won’t find a bag like this on the market.

I just recently received my trademark for my name and my patent is pending approval this year. Every step has brough us closer to our mission; making everyday self-defense tools more accessible, stylish and fast to reach because safety shouldn’t come with sacrifice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been an easy road. I secured another job to fund my business and spent many hours going without sleep in order to communicate with designers to get the bag where it needed to be. One of the biggest struggles has been educating consumers about the importance of quick-access to self-defense tools and overcoming the misconception that non-lethal tools like pepper spray or stun guns aren’t effective. Many people underestimate the value of preparedness until they experience a close call themselves. Another challenge has been balancing growth with limited resources. As a small business working toward patent approval, managing inventory, fulfillment and marketing has been challenging. I have also faced the hurdle of breaking into a competitive market where larger brands dominate ad space and visibility. Standing out meant being creative, focusing on our unique story, and building trust through direct customer interaction at vendor events and on social media. Despite these struggles, each challenge has helped shaped our brand and made our mission clearer: to make self-defense easy, accessible and empowering.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been practicing as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2007. I am also licensed as a substance abuse counselor and a DWI provider. I am a mitigation specialist with the court system as well.

I am proud of the fact that I was able to build something from the ground up, designing a patent pending product and creating a brand that gives people the tools and confidence to stay safe, stylish and ready. What makes me the proudest is every time someone tells me they feel safer with Strap Da Pack. It reminds me why I got started. This is bigger than a bag. It’s about confidence, protection and a peace of mind.

What sets Strap Da Pack from others is the unique blend of functionality, fashion and purpose. Unlike traditional self-defense gear that’s often bulky, hard to access or lacks style, our bags are designed specifically for quick access in high stress moments with two magnetic closure points that allows users to grab their tools instantly. This feature addresses a real safety concern that: in emergencies, every second counts.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has definitely showed up in both tough and unexpected ways. Honestly, the entire reason I started Strap Da Pack came from what I would consider a moment of bad luck where I was almost attacked while leaving work one night and I couldn’t access my self-defense tools and it really shook me. But that moment became the turning point for me. Instead of being frightened and shutting down, I turned that experience into motivation to create a solution, which is how Strap Da Pack was birthed.

I have also had moments of good luck too like meeting amazing people at vendor events and getting positive feedback from customers. But I always say that luck only works if you are ready for it. So, while luck has opened a few doors, it was hard work and purpose that got me through them.
