Life & Work with Carolina Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Guzman.

Hi Carolina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a love for makeup but really started getting into it after watching makeup videos on YouTube about 8 years ago. I loved watching how others did their makeup and learning all about these different products I never knew existed.

I was gifted my first expensive eyeshadow palette and started learning how to do my makeup just by watching YouTube videos. After about 2 years, I had my son and became a stay-at-home mom. I decided to start my own YouTube channel where I did vlogs, makeup hauls, product reviews, makeup tutorials, etc.

I would practice different looks on myself and eventually, friends and family started noticing how well I did my own makeup. A close friend requested I do her makeup for an upcoming wedding and I was so nervous because I had never done makeup on anyone else, but she gave me the push I needed.

I have been a freelance makeup artist in the Raleigh area for about 4 years now and absolutely love what I do. Makeup is truly my passion and I love making my clients feel like their most confident selves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road and I had numerous challenges throughout the years. Since I’m a self-taught freelance makeup artist, I wasn’t able to afford to go to school to become a cosmetologist or esthetician.

I started doing makeup on myself, family, friends, and co-workers to practice before I even had the confidence to book clients. I’ve struggled a lot with self-doubt and comparing myself to others. It’s been one of my biggest setbacks and it’s still something I am working on. Balancing my time has also been challenging.

I’m a mom of two, a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl who keep me very busy. I work full time during the week at my regular 9-5 job. I do freelance makeup on the weekends for myself or other teams in the Raleigh area and I still try to film YouTube/TikTok videos and keep up with social media. I continue to push myself to get out of my comfort zone because it’s my passion and something I loves doing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been a freelance makeup artist in the Raleigh area for over 4 years now. I don’t specialize in one specific look but soft glam makeup looks are my favorite. I also love skincare and always make sure to prep my client’s skin. I want my clients to look radiant, youthful, and have a glow from within.

I’m proud of every look I’ve done and client I’ve had. It shows how much progress I’ve made and will continue to make in the years to come. I’m also Latina, I’m so proud that I get to meet and work with other amazing Latina artists who inspire me to be creative.

I am available for various on-site services including natural, soft glam, glam, bridal, maternity/engagement pictures, photoshoots, and other special occasion makeup.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I feel like there will be a higher demand for clean beauty products.

More people are questioning what exactly is being put into products and what it will do for their skin and the environment. I love trying and testing new products to improve and include in my kit.

I can definitely see more clients wanting clean, vegan, organic, cruelty-free products. This industry is always changing and continues to grow more every year. I am so excited to see what new trends will happen and what new brands and products will come out.
