Life & Work with Chicken Ranch Road Show of Raleigh, NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chicken Ranch Road Show.

Hi Chicken Ranch Road Show, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are Chicken Ranch Road Show an unhinged Americana band comprised of Robin, Amanda, Isabel, Patsy, and Ali. A few of our members already were close friends but it was a fundraiser for Girls Rock NC that introduced the remaining members and would lead to us starting a band. Girls Rock NC host a fundraising event for adults called Rock Roulette to help fund their free summer camp for gender-expansive youth who are interested in music. It was through there that Ali, Amanda, and Isabel met each other and formed Spice Coven, with Isabel’s good friend Patsy as band manager.

We decided after the fundraiser was over that we wanted to continue making music together and formed our band in 2023. We took our time writing songs that reflected how we feel about the state of the world and our place in it. It has been amazing playing locally and meeting so many amazing artists, all while getting to do something we love so much.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being in a band in your 30s is no joke. Coordinating schedules between five members all balancing different things in life is tough but we still find time to practice and get together almost once a week! It can also be hard booking shows in a town that has so much talent but we are carving out a nice niche for ourselves in the queer country space.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Unhinged Americana and folk music

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We are a group of five recovering perfectionists and finding the space to feel safe while being creative can be challenging. But I think that that shared fear has made the vulnerability of songwriting easier. It’s tough to bring an unfinished song to practice, to let others bring their own spin to it, and to experiment and workshop things out in the open. The vulnerability we have cultivated has extended to other areas of our life. Every week we find the time to have dinner as a group and catch up, to share the highs and lows of the week, and in that we have found an incredibly supportive community each of us was looking for.
