Life & Work with Devin Hunter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Hunter.

Hi Devin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hey! My name is Devin Hunter. I’m a 24-year-old photographer based out of beautiful Raleigh, North Carolina. My passion for photography started when I was in the eighth grade. For Christmas that year, I was gifted a basic 10-megapixel point and shoot camera and haven’t stopped taking photos since.

I love capturing moments of family, friends, and clients. It brings me immense joy freezing memories and moments with my camera they will get to share with others that will last generations! These last 4 to 5 years, I’ve been able to take my talents to several other cities, including New York, have built a decent-sized client base, and have worked with some notable names along the way. Currently, I am shifting focus and entering a new season where I will be working in film and television.

My passion for photography still remains, but I have so much to give creatively that storytelling via film and directing is really calling my name. Alongside being a photographer, I am also a musician. I’ve been a percussionist since I was about 6, and over time have learned to play numerous other instruments. The arts are a huge part of who I am, and I’m very grateful to continue to grow and share my work.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
To be honest, at this very moment, I am dealing with a huge creative block that has been looming for about 3 months now.

I am working my way through it by just taking a step back and focusing on other aspects of my life. With everything comes challenges. I’ve found that my journey thus far has been decently smooth, but only because I try to always be one step ahead and keep a consistent approach.

That may sound very basic, but that is what keeps me motivated and prepared to handle the challenges along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I typically focus on portrait photography for the most part. I’m known for my moody portraits.

To put it simply, not a lot of smiles. My portraits depict one’s vulnerability within the moment. I would also describe my work as conversational portraiture. I feel like the best portraits are taken when the subject is unaware that the image is being taken, where they almost forget the camera is there and look past the lens to me.

A session with me is an experience. My clients always feel they can tell their story safely through my lens and can trust that I can capture that.

What does success mean to you?
I would describe success on a microscale. I see it as something that can come from achieving the correct or desired result from an attempt. The attempt to be successful is what truly matters to me.

What happens along the way, whether it is good or a complete failure, the fact that an attempt was made is what will drive and fuel the dream of ultimate success.
