Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Roberts.
Hi Heather, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi there! My name is Heather Roberts and I am the Owner/Lead Photographer at Swan Creek Studios. I have been a lover of photography since I was a little girl looking through family albums and boxes of photos. I have been doing it professionally since 2010 when I received my first DSLR camera. I started out doing headshots and portraits for local musicians and community events. While I was in college, I did more Family and Children Photography and after college, I expanded into various types of photography including Engagement, Wedding, Maternity, Newborn, (one year, School-age), Sorority, Business, and even Pet Photography!
My husband and I both attended UNC School of the Arts in different fields: I was in Design and Production (Theatrical Painting) and my husband went for Visual Arts. We have both been very creative people and have challenged each other along our path through life together. While I was in college and a little bit afterward, my husband and I painted for several performing artists and theatrical productions across the country for a few years. After a while, I felt my true calling was photography, and my husband and I decided to come back to NC to start our small businesses.
We recently purchased 20 acres of land in hopes of transforming it into a place for people and animals alike to come and have a great time. I have hosted many Photography sessions here on our land and we also board many dogs for clients as well on our 20 acres of land. We found raw land and shaped it into our dream home. We installed a driveway, septic system, drilled water well and moved a house from Greensboro all the way to our little place in Elkin NC.
We have been shaping and molding this place into something that everyone can enjoy-especially our community. We eventually want to not only have our Photography and Dog Boarding business here, but also a farm, homestead, and community place for family, friends, and others to come and enjoy. We see our home as another piece of art that we get to work on every day and share with others.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a North Carolina native and have been doing Family photography for over 10 years. I specialize in all types of photography that you can think of. Maternity, Newborn, Weddings, Holidays, Birthday Parties, Sororities, Boudoir, Business Headshots, and even Pet Portraits and Landscape.
I love what I do and I feel so much joy to be able to capture sweet and precious moments for families.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson that I have learned along my journey, is to always keep learning. In the beginning, I thought Photography was just about taking pictures. It’s not. It’s marketing, networking, business development, creative thinking, management… and the list goes on!
Constantly learning, growing with the market, and getting my business out there was crucial in the development of my business.
