Life & Work with Jamelle Flowers of Charlotte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamelle Flowers.

Hi Jamelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was born in Hawaii and lived worldwide via the military. My family eventually settled in New York. Music has been a part of my life since childhood. I grew up singing in the church choir and playing the drums. That was where I got my musical start. I wrote my first song at 14. I moved to Charlotte after college and have been pursuing a musical career. I have to take a moment and give a very special shoutout to Kenyatta, the President of Rich Boy Bluz Entertainment Group, Sierra & the writers of HERSong and the 4 Horsemen production team. This is an incredibly talented group & I’m blessed to work with them. I’m an Eddy award winner. The Eddy awards are the only nationally televised award show for independent artists. I’ve also ventured into the acting world. I’ve been blessed to star in several films on Tubi TV, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. I’ve found success on the acting side as I’ve been selected to lead in a few upcoming film projects currently in pre-production. I’ve discovered a passion for acting, but music will always be my true love. I love being creative. I have 2 albums currently out on all platforms, and I’m wrapping up my 3rd studio album and looking to take my music career to the next level with this following output. I recently received a grant from the Arts & Science Council of Charlotte to assist with funding for my upcoming album and its release. I feel excited to share my story and music with the world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
It has only sometimes been a smooth road. Art is so subjective and opinion-based, which can cause you to doubt yourself. One of my struggles was finding my voice. By that, I mean some people tried to shape my art to be the same as someone else’s, but I had to find my voice, get comfortable with who I am as an artist, and be confident in what I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am a singer and songwriter. I’m known for my music, but people are also beginning to know me for my acting. I would love to be an artist who can do both and succeed with both. What sets me apart is that I only want to be me. I don’t want to be a carbon copy of someone else. I believe authenticity breeds longevity. We remember the ones who were authentic and innovative. Not the imitators.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
People desire a return to real artistry and musicianship when it comes to music. There was a push at one point to make everything sound the same, but it wasn’t sustainable. People want to return to a feeling in music when it speaks to the deeper parts of who they are.
