Life & Work with Jessica Gonzalez of Charlotte NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gonzalez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am Puerto Rican and Italian so food is an automatic love language for me. I was always in the kitchen growing up and had a tremendous connection with my grandpa. He would always ask “What’s my little chef making today”. Sadly he passed away when I was 16 and I told myself that I would continue to be in the kitchen in his memory. At 16, I also found my first job which was at a Nestle Toll House Cafe. Here, I fell in love with baking and learned how to decorate with frosting. After leaving that job, my passion for baking continued and there Jess Custom Cakes was born

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not at all. As someone who comes from a family where nothing was ever handed to them, I had to overcome financial barriers, difficulties with self confidence in my baking, and learning everything from youtube/videos with many MANY trials and errors. I didn’t have enough money to go to college and am having to learn all of the business aspects by myself. To this day I am still learning new things and still have some kinks to smooth out but I wouldn’t have it any other way

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a home based baker, who specializes in custom cakes and treats. I am known for my vintage style heart cakes! I am most proud of the fact that I get to bring a smile on peoples face once they receive their cake for their celebrations. There’s nothing more rewarding than that. I feel as if my flavors/designs set me apart from others. Not only that, but my passion as well. Not everyone can say that they are passionate about something and make people smile with that.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am slowly introducing new menu items that consist of various types of pastries and baked goods. Be on the lookout for a heavy Puerto Rican/Italian influence in those since Is love to incorporate my heritage in my work!
