Life & Work with Joey Spencer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Spencer.  

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In April 2016., after the death of my wife, I hit an all-time low that caused me to run astray from a 21-year stewardship and Ministerial Position in the Church which I had honorably served all those years; I was torn, hurt, and Depressed and Reverted to Alcohol and Drugs to ease the Pain. Eventually, after a firm Reality Check, A bout with bad Health, I surrendered and moved to Raleigh, N.C. It was nothing for me to move anywhere I please because I had no kids to hold me back. In 2017 I moved to Raleigh in my Pick-up Truck with everything I could carry on the back. Upon arriving the place, I had arranged to rent; the Tenants refused to leave. I was stuck with nowhere to go; I slept in my truck until it got towed with all my belongings, and that’s how I ended up in “Wilmington Street Shelter in Raleigh, N.C. I had a ” Made Up Mind” that I would utilize every resource they had to offer and every Program. I received my V.A Benefits and Apartment after I completed the Program and Spoke on T.V in representation of the Shelter to tell my story. I got back in Church and met my wife, who is an Elementary School Teacher. I am an Ordained Elder at Macedonia New Life Church, 2004 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, N.C.; my Pastor is Rev. Dr. Joe L. Stevenson. I am on the Board of Directors at ” Oak City Cares Shelter and on The,” Advisory Board Commission for the Shelter in Wake County. I am founder of ” Bread of Life Street Outreach Ministry, where we Physically and Spiritually Feed The Homeless On-Site in Tent Camps, Parks, etc. I am also President of Macedonia Evangelistic Street Outreach and Outreach Coordinator where we Distribute Free Food and Groceries Every Thursday from 12_1:00 P.M and Every 1st and 3rd Saturday. I went from the “Bench To The Board” and advocated for those who suffer that they can do the same. I Thank ” Voyage Raleigh Magazine for this opportunity to share my story. Thanks. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Homelessness, depression, alcohol and drugs, no support system, and my own mental challenges that resulted from deaths of loved ones. Spiritual Challenges also.

Our lives in Christ matters. Our Beliefs Matter, Our Freedoms and Rights as Citizens Matter, Our Children Future Matter, and Our Climate Matters. Our chosen Leaders Matters.
