Life & Work with K Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to K Hill.

Hi K, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started creating music in Wilson, NC while attending Ralph L. Fike High School. After graduation, attending NCA&T in Greensboro, NC, I discovered that the possibility of a music career could be a reality. After watching producer Ski Beats become successful with Jay-Z and Camp Lo and producer Fanatic with Lil Kim, I began to create music for fellow students and friends from my hometown.

While home on summer break, I began to deejay and mentor at Reid Street Community center under the leadership of Charles Jones. The next year I began to record my first project together entitled “Da Banquet” Vol I along with my friend and fellow producer, Vincent “Video” Woodard, and a few artists from my area.

That project solidified my foundation as a producer. While hosting a release party for “Da Banquet”, I was able to connect with a then-upcoming producer, 9th Wonder.

Through that meeting, I was able to travel on the uprise of the NC Hip-Hop scene via the success of Justus League/Little Brother as an affiliate. Building my name, K-Hill, allowed me the opportunity to receive my first 12″ deal via Neblina Records, a placement on 9th Wonder’s Dream Merchant Vol 1, and my first placement as a producer on NC artist Kaze 12″ release the same year.

I’ve been able to produce, perform, and record alongside some prominent artists in the industry. Later on, my love for deejaying came back in the fold as a way to break incredible records from undiscovered artists while at events. This is what lead me to this Voyage Raleigh interview.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been an easy one.

However, anything that is worth its weight is going to take work to obtain. Some of the struggles include balancing the regular 9 to 5 and supporting a family while trying to build a music career. It was tough but I wouldn’t change it for the world. That experience has made me appreciate what I have now more than ever.

Another obstacle was the realization that the music game is a sport, competition, and every associate is not built with the same values. You may have great collaborations and wins together but unfortunately, those are not the grounds for a lifetime bond in every case.

Realize this first and stay laser-focused on your goals and aspirations. Treat people with respect, work consistently and you will be around forever.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I am not creating, I am a father, a husband, an uncle, and a field technician for a communications company.

When I am creating, I am K-Hill, a recording artist, a producer (Scored By Achilles Hill), and a DJ (Hillustrious Affairs). I also consult other artists with the knowledge and resources that I have obtained over the years.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out. Watch the Kanye West documentary on Netflix.

That will give you the confidence you need to persevere through doubt and rejection. Keep you a tight network who want to see you win. Stay focused. Stay strong. Remember, this is a business.

When you are on the come up, there may be resistance but once you push through, everything will be all worth it.
