Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucinda Moore.
Hi Lucinda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, could you briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
At four years old, I was holding a Hawkins family album cover! I pointed to the album cover and told my mom, “I am going to sing with this lady one day.” It was Tramaine Hawkins.
At the age of 16, out of the blue, I received a call from my cousin Jonathan Dubose, who was the guitar player for the Hawkins family, saying that Tramaine Hawkins needed a soprano. I was that soprano. The experience I had singing background vocals for her set me up for where I am right now. I had the privilege of singing on her first live recording, along with a mic toss. I was shaking in my boots because that was my first time singing in front of thousands of people!
I thank God for my journey. I am still on this road called ministry, and the world is a part of this path!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it was not a smooth road. Anyone who has a smooth road to success has likely experienced some cheating along the way. Success is not easy to achieve. I went through a divorce, faced betrayal from people who said they were for me, experienced rejection from some in the gospel industry, and was laughed at because of my dreams and visions. I almost gave up! I got signed to Tyscot Records. The year I won a Stellar Award for Best Traditional Female Artist of the Year, I was dropped from the label!
After that, I took a 10-year hiatus. During that time, in 2015, the doctor told me I had a cyst the size of a watermelon on my spine, and if I didn’t get surgery right away, I would be paralyzed within the next week. I had the surgery, and my heart stopped on the operating table. When I regained consciousness, they told me what happened. It was in the ICU that I wrote the song “Lord, I Hear You.” I wrote this song in my hospital bed.
In 2019, I was going to release that song, but the Lord told me to hold it until after the pandemic was over. We ended up releasing that song to the world in 2022. It hit number one on the charts, and I am riding on the success of that journey. I passed the test. I have a saying: if you give up during the process, you will have to start from the beginning and take that test all over again. I don’t care how hard things get in your life; don’t you ever give up on your dream. Lift your hands and say, “Lord, I Hear You!”
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a national recording artist and an entrepreneur. I’ve been in the gospel industry for 20 years. I own my own boutique business, selling clothes for women and men. I am known for my fashion and my voice. I am also recognized for wearing unique stiletto shoes.
I am most proud of where God has placed me. The greatest thing in my life that I thank God for is staying humble. Another thing I’m proud of is my three sons and my grandchildren.
What sets me apart from others is that I am a go-getter. No one will ever tell me what I cannot do. I will prove to you that it can be done. I am so thankful for the drive that is in my DNA. My grandfather was one of the hardest-working men I have ever seen. I would watch him get on a plow on his farm at 100 years old. My mom is in her mid-80s and just stopped working a full-time job. Working hard, never giving up, and staying persistent is in my DNA.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the gospel industry coming full circle and getting back to where it was. It was fun years ago. Right now, the gospel industry is going through major transitions, with record labels falling apart, leaving independent artists who have never scratched the surface of having recording contracts to promote and push themselves without knowing what to do, how to do it, or who to talk to.
I have a heart for these types of artists while still trying to help myself! I want the gospel industry to reach a point where we weed out the people who are taking advantage of those who don’t know.
