Life & Work with Lucius Downey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucius Downey.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing music and poems when I was about 8 years old. As I got older, I started recording in music studios, and around the age of 21, I was close to signing with a major record label. Things didn’t go as planned, and I sort of lost interest in writing afterward. Spring forward 20 years later, and I decided I wanted to get back into writing, but this time instead of writing music, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to challenge myself and entertain kids at the same time. I started writing down several ideas and after many thoughts, I knew I wanted this entire project to be centered around my son Tyler. I started shuffling through pics trying to find that perfect picture of him for my illustrator to create in cartoon form. The first time I saw his sketch ideas immediately started flowing and I felt good about writing again.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth, and I didn’t anticipate it would be. This was my first time writing and publishing a book, so I spent many hours gathering research. The biggest challenge was figuring out where to start, what to do, and how to do it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been working in Information Technology for over 22 years, but I’ve always loved writing. The current book “Tyler Travels New York City” takes young kids on an adventure through one of the greatest cities in the world. This book is the first release in the Tyler Travels series, which will take kids on many more adventures soon. I have a variety of books for children; some will rhyme, and some will not, but they all will be engaging. TYLERCLUB29 is a brand and in addition to the books and merchandise, there will be educational apps and a cartoon in the future.

What do you think about luck?
I’m not sure, to be honest. I believe that if you do good things in life, good things will happen to you, that’s my luck.
