Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Dillon.
Hi Maggie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started working in the interior design industry in 2013 after graduating from Wofford College, with my first job being at Circa Interiors & Antiques in Charlotte, NC. It was a great way to get my foot in the door of interiors and affirmed my decision to go back to school for design at the Art Institute of Charlotte.
I began taking classes and working part-time for Charlotte Lucas Interior Design, which quickly grew into a full-time position. I was with Charlotte for nearly 6 years and learned so much about the business from her. Fast forward to November 2019; I moved from Charlotte to Chapel Hill where my husband had recently started business school.
I was lucky enough to have a return client from my CLID days reach out about a beach house and officially launched* Maggie Dillon Interiors in early 2020!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Given the circumstances surrounding my launch and what was going on in the world around us with COVID-19, it felt like an incredibly sensitive time to make such a (comparatively) minor announcement. I had a lot of support and encouragement from my husband, family, and several friends, so I decided to take the next steps with MDI, and I am grateful for every day I’ve been in business.
While there was so much uncertainty in the outside world, one constant was the security of people’s homes. Being inside afforded my clients an opportunity to shift the way their homes functioned and allowed me an even greater understanding of what people look for as they live day to day in these safe spaces.
Through this process, I’ve been able to develop great friendships with my clients and am ever-appreciative of their faith in me as a designer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a full-service, boutique design firm that focuses on residential interiors. I get a kick out of offering clients an unexpected color story or pattern play that reflects their personalities and aesthetics.
By combining highs and lows, such as old antiques and new production pieces, I’m able to achieve a balance that’s at once timeless and fresh.
The collaborative aspect of my design process inspires me to develop my understanding of what different clients want to achieve for their homes.
What are your plans for the future?
After beginning with local projects, over the last year, I’ve been able to expand my work across the east coast, from Brooklyn to Charleston, and look forward to pursuing exciting opportunities in new locations. I’ve made it my 2022 goal to expand Maggie Dillon Interiors with new, talented people that will allow me to better serve the growing needs of our clientele.
