Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Scott.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I guess you could say that am a renaissance woman! I’ve been a teacher, community volunteer, youth minister, hospital chaplain, travel host, artist, and now art studio owner. I’m also a mother, daughter, sister and friend. I love people, laughing and living it up. After Covid, I focused on my art career. Art is therapy to me. There’s nothing like a blank canvas, paints, and knowing that I can create anything I want. Becoming an artist led me to Wine and Design Greensboro. They hired me as an Art Teacher in July 2022. This is an amazing company led by amazing women. Our CEO had a great idea, took it to Shark Tank, which loved it of course, and started opening across the country. When I discovered the Greensboro owner wanted to sell, I jumped at the chance, and here I am!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh my goodness!!! The social media has been such a challenge. When I was born, TVs were box-shaped, in college a had a typewriter and when I taught school using email to communicate was brand new. Trying to learn all of the many social media platforms has been so difficult. I swear technology is just plan mean to me. If you didn’t grow up with all of this stuff, it seems so out of reach. Thankfully, I’ve surrounded myself with some young fantastic techno geniuses and it’s starting to get easier.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Once my kids headed off to school all day, I decided that I’d take some art classes. I’d been wanting to learn how to paint for years. My first art teacher was very detailed. My pieces looked more like a photo than a painting. The skills I learned with her gave me an incredible foundation. My second teacher was an abstract lover. He taught me how to be creative and loose in my pieces. Using brush strokes, color combinations, shadows, and light I learned how to create pieces that had meaning and emotion for the viewer. Having this combination of teachers led me to absolutely love painting!
When a dear friend of mine passed away from ALS, I started painting angels. The first was her, and it brought me such peace. From there, I painted angels for other friends and caregivers. A friend asked me to paint seven angels for a group of ladies going through cancer treatments. More and more people began to request them, so I just kept on going. When someone comes up to tell me they have one of my angels I feel so thankful that I was able to bring joy with something I created with love.
Now, I am well known for my angels. They range in size from 4×4 inches to 4×4 feet. One of my favorite angels was chosen to be on the cover of a local community organization. I love that so many people got to see her. She is one of the very few that I kept for myself. Having the ability to paint and give to others has been such a joy!
Wine and Design is a great opportunity for me to spread my wings, bringing art to a whole lot of people. We have open studio times that anyone can book online. We also give the gift of art through Private Events, Art Buzz Kids, On Wheels (we bring it to you), Team Building, and Paint it Forward. Everyone is an artist, and we are here to spread joy through art all over the place!
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is scary because it isn’t a sure thing. It’s uncomfortable. You might fail, but you might succeed. It is human nature to believe that failure is worse than success. So, some just don’t try. They stick with what they’ve got. They go for safety, but that’s not much fun. I’ve decided that failure is part of success. Failure is a great education in how to succeed next time. When I bought the Wine and Design Greensboro studio, I was and still am scared of being a failure but deep down I know I won’t fail. I won’t let myself. I’ll just keep going. I’ve already made a bunch of mistakes, and we are still in business. In fact, some of these goof-ups have led to great laughs. I guess you could say my goofs have created greatness!
