Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakia Totten.
Nakia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career in health care administration. I was a young, single mom and attended school full time as well as worked full time. My plate was definitely full, but I thoroughly enjoyed being busy. While working the administrative positions, I was enrolled at Strayer University for a degree in Bachelors Of Business Administration, concentrating in health care administration. Once I graduated, I was promoted within my department to Practice Manager. I wanted to change the culture and not only be a voice for our patients but also for our staff. My goal was to create an enjoyable work environment while also being an effective leader.
I decided to go back to school and obtain a Master’s Of Science degree, concentrating in health care management. I graduated in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. I like to say that I am always a student. I want to continue to learn every single day!
My goal is to always give 120% at whatever I am doing, so I am always studying and learning.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey was not always smooth. Being a single mother, working, and going to school was difficult. So difficult that I thought it was a bright idea to go back for my master’s degree.
I knew the sacrifice would eventually pay off in the end. I am proud that I was able to show my son the power of not giving up on your goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
After spending nearly the past decade working in health care, I decided to make a career change. It wasn’t something that I decided on lightly. I spent the past 10 years working in health care and about 6 years in school. Leaving the field was definitely hard. However, I knew my time had come to an end.
I took a leap of faith and decided to enroll in real estate school. I was able to complete my schooling, state test, and 90-hour post-licensing all under 4 months. It was definitely a proud moment to become an NC Real Estate Broker and have my provisional status removed so quickly.
Now, I am currently a Realtor at A Cole Realty. I was very particular about the brokerage I joined because I wanted to make sure our mission and values were aligned. After meeting with A Cole Realty, I knew that was the place I needed to be.
I pride myself on truly caring for others. Each career I have had has been in the field of servicing others. A lot of people look at the real estate life as a “flashy, glamorous job.” However, that’s not why I do it. Purchasing a home is a huge financial decision. There can be so many emotions around this. My goal is to eliminate the stress from my clients and make the process as smooth as possible. When they look back at their home journey experience, I want them to feel as if it was truly one of the best moments in their lives. That’s what sets me apart, and that’s the experience I plan to provide for all of my clients!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
Referrals are a huge part of my business. It is true that people buy from someone they love, trust, and care about. Having people that know my character and work ethic send referrals means the world to me. It shows that they trust in my ability to care for the client they are sending over.
