Life & Work with Raven Finley-Flowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raven Finley-Flowers.

Hi Raven, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I had first started my business in the summer of 2018 before I started my senior year of college. Not sure of what to do I knew whatever I would be doing would involve fitness. I was always known for being in the gym outside of being at practice, so I figured why not. I then hopped online passed my personal training certification and started training people for $55 dollars a month. Once school started, I had begun to do free group training sessions throughout my senior year at 6 am MWF which included 6-10 women that showed up each morning.

I then graduated in May 2019 with a major in Exercise Science and a minor in coaching and had gotten a job as a leasing consultant during the day and worked the night shift watching over people with special needs. Feeling optimistic I had gotten my first real client in October of 2019 outside of the group fitness sessions I was doing at my apartment complex. At this point, I worked my way up to charging $100 dollars a month for 3 sessions a week and extra workouts to do on their own.

Since then my clientele slowly began to increase but for me to make time for my clients I had found part-time jobs such as being a server or working at a gym to have a place to train and have the availability that I needed; while I was studying for other certifications. The very first client that started my journey had told me that I was not charging him enough for what I was capable of doing so he started paying me double of what I was asking for. This doubled my worth as a trainer and I had begun charging people what I knew I was worth. I know that I am not your ordinary trainer because not only do I work with my clients physically but I work on them mentally.

My goal is for you to take what you learn from me and apply that to your life. I want to see people succeed even after they leave me. I can honestly say this wouldn’t have happened unless that one person believed in me and my skill set. Since then, I had solidified my LLC, opened up my business bank account, worked with more people in having events, logo designs, marketing, and studying for more certifications.

As a growing business, I am overjoyed to say that I’ve been blessed with so many opportunities thus far and am excited to see what’s to come next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. My business is truly people-based. I have to have people willing to put themselves through the pain in the gym constantly even when results come slow. I can be as motivational as I want to be, but success is based on the consistency and willingness of my clients.

Another obstacle is getting people to listen, especially when they want to do whatever they want to do. There have been countless times where I’ve been telling my clients for months to do something and it will be month 3 when they finally listen. Then come back to me saying your right. Also, trying to learn how to run a business while working a job is a task within itself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I am a leasing consultant, manager in training at Village Green Apartments in Raleigh, NC. So it’s safe to say that my mentors are teaching me a lot on how to run a business better and the skills/mindset that I need to progress me forward. While I work a job my goal is to learn as much as I can on the admin side so that I carry these skills into my own business.

What sets me apart is me. I understand what I have to offer whether it be my knowledge, personality, or drive. I am completely unique in comparison to others. I am my own individual, so anything I learn I will do it in a way that best fits me while I serve others.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Never get too comfortable. At any moment, everything in your life can totally change. It’s just a matter of what you are willing to do to keep moving forward instead of sitting in one place for too long.
