Today we’d like to introduce you to Shafar Massenburg .
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
At first, I tried to go with the social norms by going to college after high school. I went to study theatre. And within my first 2 years, I slowly realized my passion for writing. Always having to read scripts made me want to dive more onto how you can build a story through words. So I left school and moved to Texas for a bit, which really inspired my creativity in poetry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not. Some struggle, I would say, is living outside the box. Mostly everyone wants you to go & finish school. But I feel college personally isn’t for everyone. Not only did I leave my hometown, but I was also all by myself trying to navigate, network & explore.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an actor & writer. I’m known in my community for both & I’m grateful. I write poetry and am very thankful to be given this gift. What I’m proud of the most is everything I do. I never see any gig as “small” or any piece I write as “small.” What sets me apart from others is my drive & determination. If I want something, I’m going to get it. I speak my dreams to reality, so I’m happy.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Love yourself. Love yourself no matter what career field you want to get into or just anything in general. As an artist, your work is a reflection of you. The more you love yourself, the more confidence & passion you’ll have in most of your work. And most importantly, being your support is a blessing anyone can have. If you love & support yourself, you’ll enjoy whatever you’re doing more.
