Today we’d like to introduce you to Shomoré Irene Wright
Hi ShoMoré Irene, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey has been shaped by a deep passion for communication, community involvement, and personal growth. Growing up in Ohio, I developed the ability to connect with people from all walks of life and learned the importance of understanding diverse cultures and perspectives.
After graduating from high school, I earned a degree in Medical Assisting from Eastern Gateway Community College. My experiences in community and political organizations led me to work as a Field Organizer for the Ohio Republican Party, where I discovered my passion for public relations and political advocacy. This motivated me to pursue a degree in Communications with a focus on Public Relations at Southern New Hampshire University.
Throughout my career, I’ve held various roles, including serving as a Regional Liaison for the Ohio Secretary of State and currently working as a Recruitment Director for Canvass America. Since 2021, I’ve also been a dedicated yoga instructor, finding balance and inspiration through this practice.
Being a mother to a teen on the spectrum has been one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of my life. It inspired me to serve as an Autism Speaks ambassador for 2 years and to be actively involved in my child’s school PTO. This experience has taught me patience, understanding, and the importance of advocacy. I am deeply grateful to my son for teaching me kindness and patience—qualities that have enriched my life in countless ways. I love you.
In addition to my professional work, I served two terms as Vice President of the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals and was honored as a nominee recipient for the 2024 class of MVYP. I’m also deeply committed to my family life, cherishing my role as a wife and mother.
A more recent addition to my personal life is the book club I chose to join, “Books, Brunch, and Booze.” It perfectly aligns with my love for reading, socializing, and enjoying life’s pleasures in a balanced way. This book club, much like my other endeavors, is a reflection of my commitment to personal growth, community connection, and living a fulfilling life.
I also want to express my gratitude to my husband for the unlimited amount of love, support, and guidance he provides. I am glad to call him my person, and I love you to infinity and beyond.
Today, I continue to work on personal projects that align with my passions and values, always striving to make a positive impact in my community and beyond.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has certainly been challenging. Like many, I’ve faced bumps along the way, particularly with family, work, and mental health. I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety, which sometimes made it hard to even get out of bed. Coming from a small and dysfunctional family added to the difficulty, and I often felt isolated. Being a young mother in this environment, while also dealing with racist attitudes within the family, was incredibly hard. On top of that, losing my child’s father at a young age was a devastating blow.
My relationship with my mother was another major challenge. Her constant criticism, emotional, verbal, and sometimes physical abuse took a toll on me, making it difficult to trust others and be vulnerable, even with my husband. This led to persistent feelings of inadequacy, which affected both my academic and professional life.
During my yoga teacher training, I focused on using affirmations like “I am enough” to rebuild my self-worth. While I’ve made progress, the doubts still occasionally surface, and I have to remind myself that I am worthy, I am enough, and I am good.
Through all these challenges, my husband has been a constant source of love and support. I’m incredibly grateful for his words of encouragement, for allowing me to vent when I need to, and for simply hugging me when I’m feeling overwhelmed. His presence has made a huge difference in my journey, and I love him deeply for that.
These experiences have shaped me into who I am today. They’ve inspired me to give my time to NAMI in the Mahoning Valley, where I can support others who are going through similar struggles. Despite the hardships, I continue to push forward, finding strength in myself and striving to make a positive impact on the world around me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work as a Recruitment Director, where my primary role is to find and onboard top talent for various positions, ensuring that the right individuals are matched with the right roles. My expertise lies in public relations and communications, a field I’ve honed through both professional experience and academic pursuits.
What sets me apart is my diverse background and the unique perspectives I bring to my work. I spent five years working as a regional liaison to the Ohio Secretary of State, which deepened my love for politics and my commitment to community advocacy. From a young age, I knew I would either become an elementary teacher or work in politics. My passion for politics began during the 2008 Obama campaign when I volunteered, knocking on doors, proudly wearing an Obama campaign shirt, and even attending an event where now-President Biden was speaking, where I had the chance to meet him.
As I grew older, I identified as a Republican in my senior year of high school after taking a government class test that labeled me a conservative Democrat—a result that my teacher and I found hilarious. I became a Republican in 2016, but recently, I’ve returned to my roots as a Democrat. I can no longer morally align with the current Republican Party, which I find irate and crazy. It’s been quite terrifying to witness the changes in the party.
I’m also deeply committed to mental health advocacy, particularly through my volunteer work with NAMI Mahoning Valley. My own experiences with family struggles and mental health challenges have inspired me to help others facing similar situations.
One of my proudest achievements is turning personal challenges into opportunities to support others. Whether through my work in recruitment, my advocacy for mental health, or my efforts in public relations, I strive to make a positive impact on the lives of others, driven by a deep sense of empathy and understanding.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, I have several plans and aspirations that I’m excited about. One of my main focuses is continuing my education and completing my degree in Communications with a focus on Public Relations. This will allow me to further refine my skills and open up new opportunities in my career. I’m also planning to expand my involvement in community advocacy, particularly in the areas of mental health and supporting youth through mentorship programs.
In the political arena, I’m looking forward to becoming more actively involved in campaigns and initiatives that align with my values. Given my experience and passion for politics, I’m considering ways to contribute more directly, whether that’s through local government, community organizing, or even taking on a leadership role in a nonprofit organization.
Personally, I’m also focused on continuing to nurture my family life, spending quality time with my husband and child. Balancing career growth with family well-being is a priority for me.
In terms of big changes, I’m open to new career opportunities that may come my way, especially those that allow me to combine my love for politics, communications, and community service. Whether that means stepping into a new role or launching a new initiative, I’m excited about what the future holds.
Overall, I’m looking forward to growing both personally and professionally, continuing to make a positive impact in my community, and embracing the opportunities and challenges that come my way.
