Today we’d like to introduce you to Shonquella Terrell.
Shonquella, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started BeSHE Inc. out of my own lived experience, dealing with early trauma and later facing domestic violence. When I came to Holly Springs in 2018, I realized that helping others was something I’d always been passionate about, even if I hadn’t fully understood it before. We officially started BeSHE Inc. in 2021, launched our first fundraisers in 2022, and obtained our 501(c)(3) status in 2023. We’re still building and growing every day, and so far we’ve supported over 40 women. In short, I’ve always been that helpful light, and BeSHE Inc. is just the natural extension of that passion.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most nonprofits, we’ve faced our share of challenges, and finances and funding have been a big part of that. There’s also the struggle of overcoming judgment and getting people to really believe in what we do. But I’ve always reminded myself and others that it takes a village, and it’s never about me or any person—it’s about the cause. That perspective has helped us overcome those obstacles and continue to grow.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In terms of my professional life and career, I’m not only the founder and CEO of BeSHE Inc., but I’ve also been in the hotel industry for over 20 years. For the past 10 years, I’ve worked specifically at Candlewood Suites right here in our community. Alongside that role, I hold a Business Administration degree from Wake Tech, which I earned in 2015, and I’ve completed several training certificates related to domestic violence advocacy. Starting this November, I’ll also be officially state-certified as a victim advocate.
With my long-standing experience in hospitality and formal education, I bring a unique blend of skills to both my hotel work and my nonprofit mission. I’m probably best known for our immediate-response approach at BeSHE, and I’m really proud of how many lives we’ve touched. In the end, what sets us apart is our focus on the cause and the community we serve.”
Any big plans?
In terms of our plans, we’re really looking at making a big shift. We want our neck of the woods to become leaders and be recognized for the work we do for the community and as the voice of the community. That’s a big part of the change we’re aiming for.
We’re planning to engage college students to run improv workshops for high schoolers, teaching them how coercive control can impact their futures. We’re also partnering with real estate agents to create long-term housing opportunities for women who have overcome hardships. Ultimately, we want to be known not just for responding to crises, but for leading the way in building a more aware, supportive, and resilient community. That’s the big change that we’re excited about.
