Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Case
Hi Vanessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was a teenage I was always asked to take photos on family trips or of my friends. My love of photography really flourished my Junior and Senior year of high school when I shadowed my Spanish teacher, who is also a professional photographer, for my senior project. After graduation, life happened, and my dream fell to the wayside whenever I started my career in healthcare and ran away from home (NC) to Florida. Upon moving back home to North Carolina, I decided that if it was dream that had stuck around for over a decade, it was time to actually chase it! I got a hand-me-down camera and mainly took photos of my travels, my pets or my friends. I purchased my first “big girl camera”, and started Vanessa Lynn Photography in December of 2024. Like every small business owner would tell you, it’s started small, but like any dream, it doesn’t work unless you do! I’m blessed for the people I have met thus far, and can’t wait to see where else this journey takes me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing “worth it” ever comes easy, but that’s with anything and everything in life! Camera equipment is not cheap and learning from the ground up (shooting in manual, your own editing style, how many memory cards you actually need (HA!) etc.) are always challenging. The industry is pretty saturated right now with the advancement in cell phone cameras, and accessibility to editing on almost any social media app. Learning your unique style, making those genuine connections with clients and paving your own way take a lot of courage and perseverance.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My goal is to catch the magic moments in between the “big moments” in life. I would love to shoot your wedding, and your prom pictures but I also want to capture the moments at home of a new mom making lunch for her 3 year old, with a newborn on her hip. It’s the little glimmers of magic in between the “big” moments that I love the most. I consider myself a documentary and lifestyle photographer. I want to catch life as it really is, and the little moments that most people miss!
I believe what sets me apart from others is that I want to capture people in the most raw and real way. I try and stay away from anything that feels too posed or made up, but instead the natural elements. I want the belly laughs, the true smiles, the little magic moments that you don’t think I would/could catch, I usually catch those! I recently had a client tell me “Wow! You got that? I didn’t even notice it!”. That’s what I love to hear!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am very (almost over) critical of my work. I have friends and family tell me all the time how good my work is, and most of the time I’m worried my clients will hate it! I work very hard during an actual session (lighting, angles, background noise, etc.) to reduce the hours in post-editing, but I still am super hard on myself.
