Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendell Womans Club.
Wendell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Wendell Woman’s Club has been part of our community since 1927, originally founded as a place
for women to come together in service, connection, and shared purpose. Over the decades, it has
played a meaningful role in shaping Wendell—serving not only as a gathering place, but as a hub for
education, leadership, and community impact. In fact, the Wendell Public Library was originally housed
within the Women’s Club, reflecting the club’s early commitment to education and access to resources
for the community.
The club has also maintained a long-standing relationship with Girl Scouts, hosting troops at the
clubhouse for generations. Records and photographs show this connection dating back to at least the1950s, and that tradition continues today as the club provides a space for young girls to gather, learn, and grow.
Throughout its history, the club has supported arts and education initiatives, hosted speakers and
programs, and created opportunities for women to grow as leaders while making a tangible difference
locally. Longstanding traditions like arts and crafts competitions, community programming, and civic
involvement have always been at the heart of the organization.
There is also a long tradition of service rooted in care for the community. For many years, the club
hosted a Thanksgiving meal for employees of the town—bringing people together around the table and
showing appreciation for those who serve Wendell every day.
Today, we are proud to carry that legacy forward while continuing to evolve to meet the needs of our
modern community. Over the past year, we’ve supported local families through Angel Tree, hosted
multiple free community events like Grinch Night, Story Time with Mrs. Claus, and Read Across
America, and provided affordable art camps for children.
We’ve also completed donation drives—including personal care items for the Dorothy Mae Hall
Women’s Center and canned goods for those in need—supported local vendors through our craft fairs,
and provided a welcoming and accessible community space through our clubhouse. We’ve hosted
events like Coffee Connections for the Wendell Chamber of Commerce, served donuts and coffee to
our town’s public works team, and hosted CPR certification classes for our members.
In addition, we’ve welcomed two Girl Scout troops to use our space free of charge, supported smaller
group initiatives like member-led craft nights, and offered discounted use of our facility for community
groups, including a local women’s Bible study. We’ve also given back through opportunities like
donating tickets to our Mother’s Day Tea and providing two free summer camp spots to families
connected with the Dorothy Mae Hall Women’s Center.
Our impact also continues through education. Through the Farm, Whitley, White Scholarship Fund,
we are able to support a Wendell student each year—continuing our long-standing commitment to
investing in future generations.
While so much has changed over the years, one thing has remained constant: the heart of the Wendell
Woman’s Club. As one of our newer members shared, “This club has given its members more than a
place to go—it gives a sense of belonging and connection.”
That sense of connection—rooted in tradition but always growing—is what continues to guide us today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many long-standing organizations, the Wendell Woman’s Club has faced its share of challenges
over the years. As times have changed, so have the needs, schedules, and expectations of the women
in our community. With more women balancing careers, families, and other commitments, maintaining
consistent engagement and participation has required thoughtful adaptation.
Another challenge has been bridging generations—honoring the deep history and traditions of the club
while also creating space for new ideas, fresh perspectives, and modern approaches to community
involvement. Change can sometimes be difficult in organizations with such strong roots, but it is also
necessary for growth.
Additionally, as a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on volunteer time and community support,
balancing resources, planning impactful events, and sustaining momentum can be an ongoing effort.
There have also been moments of internal growing pains—learning how to navigate different
leadership styles, communication approaches, and expectations among members.
However, these challenges have ultimately strengthened the club. They have pushed us to become
more inclusive, more flexible, and more intentional about creating opportunities that meet women
where they are today. We’ve introduced more accessible, low-pressure ways to get involved—like our
Mix & Mingle events—and placed a renewed focus on both community impact and meaningful
connection.
Through it all, our purpose has remained clear: to serve our community, support one another, and
continue building something that lasts for generations to come.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
For many, the Wendell Woman’s Club isn’t just an organization—it’s a thread woven through
generations.
Some of our members grew up watching their mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers gather
at the clubhouse—preparing meals together, organizing events, and working side by side to support
their community. Those memories reflect a time when community wasn’t something you had to search
for—it was something you were surrounded by.
There are stories of women coming together to host programs, create opportunities, and build lasting
friendships. Of children tagging along to meetings or events, watching quietly as relationships formed
and community work unfolded—without fully realizing at the time just how meaningful those moments
were.
Today, those same stories continue in new ways. Now, it’s a new generation of women creating those
memories—bringing their children to events, forming friendships, and building a sense of belonging that
will stay with them for years to come.
The heart of it is simple: it’s about connection, community, and the kind of place that leaves a lasting
impression long after the moment has passed.
