We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mark Chambers. Check out our conversation below.
Mark, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Deer season is only 62 days away!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a charter boat captain. The boat that I captain is called Due South and we are out of Morehead City, NC. We take people out fishing and show them a one of a kind experience, I work very hard to satisfy all my customers.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Woo-Woo Harker and my father. They taught me what a good work ethic was from a very young age. They also taught me a lot about life in general and how to handle certain situations.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I was drinking and using drugs there was a time towards the end where I did not want to live anymore. I wanted to commit suicide but could not bring myself to do it. I went to rehab shortly after which became a life changing experience for me. I have been clean and sober for almost 19 years now!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes it is. What you see is what you get. I’m the same person at home as I am at work as I am in the community. Love me or hate me I’m the same person.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That one time when I was fishing in Hatteras and I had been up for 3 days straight. I was hitchhiking from Avon and finally got picked up from some nice people. They said I smelled like liquor and I told them, “I just left a party.” I proceeded to tell them my life story and what I had done for the last three days and nights. I said, ” enough about me, what are yall guys doing up so early?” They said they were going fishing at Hatteras Harbor Marina. I said, “sweet that’s where I’m going too.” I asked what boat they were fishing on to which they replied, “The Good Times.” They were not very impressed when they realized they had just picked up the mate for The Good Times that morning.
